THE BEST OF EVERYTHING
The Neighborhood Boneyard
Barbecue spot has been a Farmington Hills fixture for 30 years.
T
hirty years as a successful res-
taurant operation in itself tells
a story ... The lead word of its
longevity story is a very important one in
the culinary field ... Consistency, which
translates into customer trust that the
food and service will be good as usual.
In the case of Boneyard on Orchard
Lake Road, south of 14 Mile, Farmington
Hills, 30 years being a neighborhood
standby has also resulted in continuous
regularity by customers who enjoy its
cleanliness and low prices as well.
Few neighborhood restaurants can boast
of a 30-year continuation ... Changing
neighborhoods are usually the culprit
along with age change ... Boneyard of
Farmington Hills continues with newer
customers and generation regulars.
Still going strong are its small and
succulent barbecued lamb ribs, which
are butchered on the premises to assure
removal of all fat ... along with greaseless,
barbecued ribs, broasted and barbecued
chicken, shrimp, salads, seafood, fish
including barbecued salmon and fresh
whitefish, sandwiches, etc ... The seven-
day-a-week waitperson service in two
spotless rooms with sitdown seating for
about 170 at lunch and dinner, Sunday-
Thursday, 11-10; Friday and Saturday,
11-11 ... and its carryout for lunch and
dinner are both with heavy counts plus.
A good neighborhood restaurant is pre-
cious ... Boneyard of Farmington Hills
definitely falls into this category.
GOOD DINING BUYS Dept. ... Gluten-
free pasta with grilled chicken and roasted
vegetables in a garlic-olive oil sauce,
$12.95 ... and Chicken Bayarda, grilled
chicken topped with sun-dried tomatoes,
arugula and artichoke hearts, $13.95 ...
r
Both dinners include salad,
potato, vegetable, focaccia bread
and rolls ... at Pasta Fagioli,
Sugarbush Plaza, Square Lake
Road, just east of Telegraph,
Bloomfield Township.
MAIL DEPT. ... "I read your
article on Siegel's Deli and you
left out one part that is also
wonderful. It has the best dairy
trays I have ever had and our
friends also rave about them ...
Bernyce Cahn
[The mom and pop owners of Siegel's,
on Maple west of Haggerty, Commerce,
Angela and Boris Israilov, make excellent
deli trays, too.]
WHEN IT COMES to getting wellness
advice, depend on a doctor ... For recom-
mendations of tasty dishes, chefs or wait-
persons many times know their menu best
... Folks get both from a couple of medics
in Dr. Steven Spector and Dr. Michael
Spalter ... They're regulars every Tuesday
for the Whitefish Pomodora at Sea Grille
on Orchard Lake Road, West Bloomfield.
GOOD SERVER DEPT. ... 33 years a
waitress and still counting ... Experience
plus for congenial Carolyn Tyler at
Deli Unique, Orchard Lake Road, West
Bloomfield, shows with her efficiency and
knowledge that continually give Carolyn
high grades ... Her server stints at Red
Cedars, Stouffers Northland, Be My Guest,
etc., were standout ones.
QUESTION & ANSWER DEPT. ...
"Now I learn that Caesar salad was created
by Prince Mike Romanoff at his restaurant
in Hollywood. You say differently. Which is
the real truth?" ... Martin Gouldstein
[Mike Romanoff, (Harry Gerguson) only
helped make it popular at his restaurant
Brunch Special For 2 $
on Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills,
and is considered responsible
for adding the anchovies, but
the Caesar Salad was most
definitely the concoction of
Italian-Mexican Chef Caesar
Cardini at his Caesar's Place
restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico
... The slight hint of ancho-
vies in Cardini's original
creation was probably from
the use of Worchestershire
sauce.]
REMEMBERING WHEN DEPT. ...
"I used to go to the Jewish Community
Center on Woodward and Holbrook and
took art lessons from Joshua Swartzman
and life medal classes with Leon Madski.
Also attending the art class that was spon-
sored by Mrs. Ann Werbe, noted for paint-
ing an excellent portrait of Rabbi Leon
Fram. Also the desk clerk Gertrude Pritz
whose husband [Hy Pritz] liked to imitate
Al Jolson and in his younger days had a
band that performed at local affairs.
"I went to dances at the Center where
they had Saturday night dances to the
tunes of Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller
and Tommy Dorsey, and later attended
the Holiday Hops that you put on in the
Center's main gym-auditorium. That's
where I met my future wife and after the
dance would walk her home down to
Linwood, which we could do because it
was safe to do in those days.
"Then years later like 50 years, I was
B'nai Brith president of the Louis Marshall
Lodge.
"A few years ago, I was a steady lunch
customer of the Alex Restaurant [Berkley]
where I was getting my favorite mush-
room barley soup. It was so delicious that
you wrote about it. I mentioned it to one
of my friends, Mr. Brickner, whose son
was a Southfield councilman, and he said
he enjoyed the soup too, but would take
me where the soup is even better. He was
right. Gateway Restaurant's [Southfield]
cup of mushroom barley soup was bigger
than Alex's bowl of soup and had mush-
rooms galore. Also, 11:30 to 2:30 they
throw in a saucer with a scoop of coleslaw
and a dill pickle. Your write-up of the
Gallery Restaurant brought memories of
the original on 10 Mile Road in the '70s. It
got me hooked to visit the Telegraph loca-
tion [Bloomfield Township], which was
fantastic and included a wonderful display
of paintings." ... Irving Handelman
AFTER ALL THESE years writing
about restaurants, the name Danny Raskin
pops up working in one ... David Sax,
author of the newly published book, Save
the Deli, informs me that a Danny Raskin
owns Manny's Deli in Chicago ... Further
revelation reveals though that he works
there with his dad, Ken, owner of Manny's
... No relation that I know of, by the way.
SIGHT SCENES ... The lady shopper at
Hiller's Market, Orchard Lake Road, West
Bloomfield, having difficulty getting a
sheet from the sanitary wipes as you enter
... A gentleman graciously pulled one out
for her and she very indignantly and ada-
mantly disgusted shied away with arms
raised because his hands had touched the
germ-ridding sheet.
CONGRATS ... To Beverly Canvasser on
her birthday ... To Lola Goldring on her
80th birthday ... To Dennis and Sharon
Green on their 11th anniversary. 1 1
