any Rose Sonenclar is too
young to have seen the televi-
sion series Little House on the
Prairie when it originally aired (1974-
1982), but she is glad to watch the
cable reruns — even after taking on
the role of one of the youngsters in the
touring musical based on the show.
Carly, 10, plays Carrie Ingalls, the
youngest child in an American family
forging a new life during America's
pioneer times.
The production, which runs Dec.
1-5 at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, stars
Melissa Gilbert as Ma Ingalls. Gilbert
grew up playing daughter Laura
Ingalls — the eventual author of the
Little House on the Prairie books
on
television.
"The characters weren't very happy
in most of the shows I've done, but
this show is completely the opposite,"
says Carly, who watched the reruns to
get ready for her role and continues
watching just for enjoyment. "It's a
change that's so much more fun."
Carly, a fifth-grader who attends a
Reform Hebrew school when she's not
on the road, has been working since
she was 6. While enrolled in an after-
school acting class at her own request,
she auditioned for a management
company and was signed.
Her stage credits include Pearl in
The Night of the Hunter, Cosette in Les
Miserables and Kim in Show Boat, the
last at Carnegie Hall.
"I enjoy being a character that I'm
not like and getting to know that char-
acter," Carly says. "I'm somewhat like
Carrie. She's spunky, which is kind of
like me; but she's a lot younger than I
am so that's the challenge!'
A special treat with this tour is
working with Melissa Gilbert.

"She talks to me about being the
younger one around adults," Carly
explains. "It's about being around
when they're talking about stuff that
I'm not supposed to be hearing. I turn
away, and she said she was the same
way when she was younger."
Carly's parents — Terri, a graphic
designer, and Bob, a copywriter —
take turns accompanying her on tour.
Older brother Russell, 15, is at home in
Westchester, N.Y.
The three children in the cast keep up
with their schoolwork under the direc-
tion of a tutor traveling with the troupe.
"I think I'm doing better than I
was in regular school because I'm
getting more attention," Carly says.
"Sometimes, it's hard to miss out on
stuff like birthday parties, but I get
to see parts of the world that people
my age aren't going to be seeing until
they're in their 20s or 30s."
The young actress has discovered
her own way of avoiding stage fright.
She turns her attention elsewhere.
The song "Make It Home" features
Carly, who took singing lessons before
the show and studies dance with a cast
member.
"The adults really help me," she says.
"I feel that what I'm learning early is
going to help me later in life!"
