GUIDE Yr 09
Jewish Home from page GG34
Dogs (Hyperion; $14.95) and her new
volume, Yiddish for Babies (Simon
and Schuster; $12.99). Each page high-
lights a Yiddish word and includes a
picture of a dog or a baby that seems
to fit the term. In the first volume, a
pug — a dog that is perpetually pant-
ing and seemingly always hot — is
shown with a towel strewn across his
shoulders in a page defining the word
shvitz (sweat). Babies of every hue and
ethnicity fill the latter, making this
new book perfect for adoptive and
interracial families.
At Coby's Judaica Center and other
booksellers.

Speaking Hebrew
Created for home and small-group use,
families can learn to speak and write
Hebrew together with Living Israeli
Hebrew for the Beginner ... the
Very Beginner! by Dr. Dani Ben Gigi
(hebrewworld.com). The kit, created
specifically for English speakers with
no knowledge of Hebrew, comes with
a workbook, CD and flashcards. "It's
very user friendly' says Sarah Shoenig,
store manager at Spitzer's Hebrew
Book and Gift Center in Southfield.
"You just pop in the CD and start to
learn conversational Hebrew" The
60-minute audio CD features a native
Israeli speaking slowly and clearly and
focuses on modern-day, spoken Israeli
Hebrew. Includes supplements for bib-
lical Hebrew and common expressions.
$34.99.
At Spitzer's Hebrew Book and Gift
Center, 21790 West 11 Mile Road,
Southfield. (248) 356-6080.
End To End To End
Jewish Dominoes (Copa Judaica) is a
game for almost any age and can be
played as a family. "It comes with 42
wooden tiles in a nice wooden storage
box. And its compact so it doesn't take
up a lot of room',' says Sarah Shoenig of
Spitzer's. The fun and educational game
is played like traditional dominoes,
but Jewish designs — like a Torah, an
Israeli flag and a driedel — are silk-
screened onto each tile. $13.95.
At Spitzer's Hebrew Book and Gift
Center.
