Take Heed!
T
ake a look around. There are
warnings of hazardous waste,
hot-to-the-touch machines,
poisonous substances, etc. Are you feel-
ing well looked after? Consider then the
overly zealous
warning makers
who thought up the
following:
• In Clemson, S.C.,
a highway sign pro-
claims, "Caution:
water on road dur-
ing rain."
• On a floodlight
carton, "This flood-
light is capable to
illuminating large
areas, even in the
dark."
Business Offices
• On a bottle of Windex, "Do not spray in
eyes."
• On a blowup toy the size of a CD,
"Warning: Do not use as a flotation
device. Do not ingest."
•At a McDonald's in Johnson City, N.Y.,
"Parking for drive-thru service only."
• On a machete, "Caution: This tool will
cut."
• On a book of matches, "Warning:
Contents may catch fire."
• On a Wet Nap, "Directions: Tear open
packet and use."
• On the package of Pine Mountain Fire
Logs, "Caution: Risk of fire."
• On a blow dryer, "Caution: Do not use
while sleeping."
• At Case Western Reserve University in
Cleveland, "Road Closed. Use Sidewalk."
• In Smokey Mountain National Park
Thrifty Manager
The Berkley-based Council Thrift Shop run
by the National Council of Jewish Women/
Greater Detroit Section has a new manager,
Robert Lebow.
The Huntington Woods resident brings
more than 30 years of interior design experi-
ence to the shop, located at 3297 W. 12 Mile.
He previously owned a
design firm specializing in
high-end residential interior
design. He has worked in
Detroit, Los Angeles and Tel
Aviv, where he lived for seven
years. He is the founder
of the Huntington Woods
Robert Lebow
Historic Districts and was
instrumental in helping to
save Rackham Golf Course.
"The Council Thrift Shops are an extremely
valuable and integral part of our community:'
Lebow said. "The work we do is both crucial
and vital to the well being of the NCJW pro-
grams we fund."
The shops are celebrating their 75th anni-
versary. The other location is in Royal Oak at
1221 E. Lincoln.
Proceeds from the shops help fund the
Ronald McDonald House, Kosher Meals on
Wheels, the All Kids Playground and the Teen
Dating Abuse Awareness Project
(www.ncjwgds.org ).
in Tennessee, "If tunnel is dark, remove
sunglasses."
Did you know how fraught with dan-
gers your everyday household items
are? Even scarier — think about what
prompted the warning in the first place.
Someone out there was not playing with
a full deck.
• On an iron, "Warning: Never iron
clothes on the body."
• On a vacuum cleaner,"1. Do not use to
pick up gasoline or flammable liquids
2. Do not use to pick up anything that is
currently burning."
• On an air conditioner carton, "Caution:
Avoid dropping air conditioners out of
windows."
It really pays to have a firm grip on the
obvious. 1

Bathroom
• Do not waste water. It is precious and our life source.
• Take showers instead of baths. You'll save energy and water. Use
the bathtub only for an occasional luxury soak.
• Install a low-flow or water-saving head on your shower. These
devices can cut hot-water consumption at shower time by 50 per-
cent.
• If you do use a tub, do not drain the water immediately in the
winter. The heat from the tub water will radiate into the bath-
room, warming it.
• Be sure to turn all faucets completely off when done. One drop
per second from a water faucet equals 200 gallons per month,
2,400 gallons each year. Leaky faucets are expensive!
• Skip showers on days when you do not need one.
• Install a tank dam in each toilet.
Jewish Thought On The Environment

stretchest out the heavens like a curtain."
