U.S. Jews
And Israel: The
Influence Of
Barack Obama

We think nothing of driving
half an hour to a good restaurant,
but we'll settle for a hospital
that's right around the corner.

p

rofessor Howard
Lupovitch, Waks Family
Associate Professor of
Jewish History at the University
of Western Ontario, will speak
about "American Jews and Israel:
A Historical Perspective on
the New Influence of President
Barack Obama" at 8 p.m. Monday,
Nov. 2, at the
Birmingham
Temple in
Farmington
Hills.
Since its
foundation in
1948, friendship
Howard
between Israel
Lupovitch
and the U.S. has
been a corner-
stone of American foreign policy.
In past decades, lobbying by
the American Israel Public Affairs
Committee (AIPAC) was most
effective in garnering support for
the policies and actions of vari-
ous Israeli governments. Some
Jews are now trying to change the
dynamics.
President Obama states he is
committed to peace based on
a two-state solution, while the
Netanyahu government says it
agrees but has its own interpre-
tation. President Obama's views
are supported by a relatively new
Jewish lobbying group, called J
Street.
The forum will provide an
understanding of how Jews can
and should support Israel by
influencing our government and
Congress.
Lupovitch is a distinguished
Jewish historian and the author
of a forthcoming book, Jews and
Judaism in World History. He is
writing a history of the Jewish
community of Budapest, Hungary.
He is a fourth-generation
Detroiter and a graduate of Hillel
Day School and the University of
Michigan, where he has been a
Fellow at the Frankel Institute for
Advanced Judaic Studies.
The forum is open to the
community at no charge. The
Birmingham Temple is at 28611
W. 12 Mile, Farmington Hills. H

As long as your health insurance allows you to go
anywhere, maybe you shouldn't confine yourself to
the neighborhood.

Because this isn't dinner, this is your life.

Year after year, the people of Southeast Michigan have
rated Beaumont as their most preferred hospital. Most
preferred for surgery and for overall quality of care.
