Heralded Composer

A

rthur "Artie" H. Fields, 87,
of Southfield, died Oct. 14,
2009.
This award-winning composer/
lyricist was born in Brooklyn; he and
his family moved to Ann Arbor and
then to Dearborn. His instrument
of choice was the trumpet. By 15, he
was playing in bands
in and around Detroit.
He fulfilled his
graduation require-
ments at Fordson
High School two
semesters early, then
commuted to Detroit's
Cass Technical High
School, where he
continued in honors
classes.
Artie Fields
After graduat-
ing from Fordson as
valedictorian, he enrolled at Wayne
State University, but left after two
years, becoming bored with march-
ing up and down the football field.
Following his interest in jazz, he
toured the country, playing in bands.
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor,
Mr. Fields enlisted in the Navy and
for three years fought in nearly every
battle in the Pacific, all the way
back to Japan as a member of the
USS Lexington, the "Blue Ghost." He
earned a Navy Commendation.
In the 1950s he settled in the
Detroit area and married Janie
Ciolek. He turned his creativity to
writing lyrics and music for com-
mercials. In 1967, he bought the

ZHANA FRIZ-PALIY, 86, of
Southfield, died Oct. 17, 2009. She was
a nurse in Russia.
She is survived by her daughter,
Luda Usherenko of West Bloomfield;
grandchildren, Victoria Usherenko and
Michael Shadkind; great-grandson,
Jared Shadkin.
Mrs. Friz-Paliy was the beloved wife
of the late Kazimir Friz-Paliy.

Alhambra Theater on Woodward,
which became the world's first
recording studio with a "floating"
control room and separate rooms
for superior missing isolation. He
was the first commercial composer
to score to film and his work won
him national and international
awards. In 1994, the
National Academy
of Television Arts
and Sciences made
Mr. Fields a member
of the Silver Circle
for his 25 years of
"significant contribu-
tions" and "dedication
to excellence."
Locally, he served
on the Southfield
School Board and
worked with New
Detroit on urban development pro-
grams.
Mr. Fields is survived by his son,
Jerry Fields of Illinois; daughter and
son-in-law, Pamela and Chris Nagel;
grandchildren, Daniel and Emily
Nagel; brother, Ronald Fields of
Westland; sisters and brother-in-law,
Beverly Sutton of California, Rene
and Lee Bleifeld of Oak Park.
He was the beloved husband of the
late Janie Fields.
Interment at Beth El Memorial
Park. Contributions may be made to
the Detroit Musicians Scholarship
Fund, 20833 Southfield Road,
Southfield, MI 48075. Arrangements

2009.

nieces and nephews.
