Joyous Celebration

Flint community welcomes a new Torah.

C

habad of Eastern Michigan in
Flint completed and dedicated a
new Torah, which was welcomed
by more than 200 friends, family and
supporters from the Flint Jewish commu-
nity and beyond on Sept. 13.
The Torah was dedicated in memory
of Frieda Bluma Polter, who lived in
Oak Park and was mother to Shainie
Weingarten, wife of Rabbi Yisroel

Weingarten, head of Chabad of Eastern
Michigan.
"My mother's devotion to Torah, mitz-
vot and deeds of kindness in the general
Detroit community, and Flint in particu-
lar, encouraged family and friends of
Chabad of Eastern Michigan to further
her legacy by writing this Torah:' Shainie
Weingarten said.
Participants at the ceremony at Chabad

House had the opportunity to fill in a let-
ter of the Torah, alongside expert scribe
Rabbi Levi Kagan of Oak Park. Keynote
speaker was Rabbi Yossi Shemtov,
Chabad representative in Toledo, who
addressed the crowd by awakening
within them their individual connection
to the Torah, specifically in preparation
for the New Year.
The celebration continued with a

grand march and dancing with the Torah.
At the Chabad House synagogue, the
other Torah scrolls were taken out of the
Ark as a show of respect and honor, and
to greet the new Torah.

Eastern Michigan, contact Rabbi Yisroel
