The Michigan Jewish War Veterans and Ladies Auxiliary were one of only two
veteran groups to take part in the Hamtramck Labor Day Parade. The Bloomfield
Township-based organization has a special interest in the history of Hamtramck.
Aside from the many Jewish merchants who started in the city and some who
still exist, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Lt. Raymond Zussman has the
park across from the city hall dedicated in his memory. Shown prior to the march
are Post Commander David George of Auburn Hills, Shelly Order of Oak Park,
Auxiliary President Myra Gross and Bernard Gross of West Bloomfield, Honor
Guardsmen Al Lewis and Mary Delidow of Oak Park, State Commander Jerry
Order of Oak Park and Chief of Staff Harmon Tron of Southfield.

Bill Berman
Honored
Michigan business
leader and philan-
thropist Mandell
"Bill" Berman
received the 20th
annual Leonard
Mandell "Bill"
N. Simons History
Berman
Award from the
Jewish Historical
Society of Michigan at its 2009 annual
meeting.
The Simons Award honors those
who have made outstanding contribu-
tions to the enrichment, preservation
and dissemination of Michigan Jewish
history. Berman's decadeslong interest
and support for local Jewish history

Society, now celebrating its 50th anni-
versary year.
The award is named for Leonard
N. Simons, a mentor of the Jewish
Historical Society of Michigan and
co-founder of the advertising agency
Simons Michelson Zieve.
