The Bloomfield Township-based organization has a special interest in the history of Hamtramck. Aside from the many Jewish merchants who started in the city and some who still exist, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Lt. Raymond Zussman has the park across from the city hall dedicated in his memory. Bill Berman Honored Michigan business leader and philan- thropist Mandell "Bill" Berman received the 20th annual Leonard Mandell "Bill" N. Simons History Berman Award from the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan at its 2009 annual meeting. The Simons Award honors those who have made outstanding contribu- tions to the enrichment, preservation and dissemination of Michigan Jewish history. Berman's decadeslong interest and support for local Jewish history and education led to his charter mem- bership in the state's Jewish Historical Society, now celebrating its 50th anni- versary year. The award is named for Leonard N. Simons, a mentor of the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan and co-founder of the advertising agency Simons Michelson Zieve. Maas Honorees Sought The Benard L. Maas Foundation, in cooperation with the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, invites nominations for the 2009 Benard L. Maas Prize for Achievement in Jewish Culture and Continuity. Conferred annually on a rotating basis in the humanities, performing arts and fine arts, the Maas Prize hon- ors individuals whose work enhances Jewish life and community. This year's award will be given in the area of humanities. A monetary prize of $3,500 and a certificate of achievement will be awarded at a public ceremony in the spring of 2010. Application forms are available online at jewishdetroit.org/maas . Individuals must submit a statement of artistic intent, two letters of support and a curriculum vitae.
