Collaborator Faces Deportation
Detroit/JTA —The U.S. Justice Department
is seeking to deport a retired Chrysler auto-
worker for collaborating with the Nazis.
In a news release on Aug. 30, the depart-
ment said that John Kalymon, 88, of
Troy committed violent acts against Jews
during World War II as a member of the
Nazi-sponsored Ukrainian Auxiliary Police
(UAP) in Nazi-occupied Lvov.
Kalymon, whose original first name is
Iwan, is suspected of shooting Jews and
killing at least one during his participation
in the "Great Operation," a Nazi-sponsored
purging of Jews in the Lvov ghetto from at
least May 1942 to March 1944. The opera-
tion included sending Jews to extermina-
tion and labor camps and shooting them
on the spot.
"With the active assistance of col-
laborators like John Kalymon, the Nazis
annihilated some 100,000 innocent Jewish
men, women and children in Lvov," said
Eli Rosenbaum, director of the Criminal
Division's Office of Special Operations,
which hunts former Nazis. "Participants in
such crimes have forfeited any right to enjoy
the precious privilege of U.S. citizenship or
to continue residing in the United States."
Kalymon, who became a U.S. citizen in
1955 after emigrating from Germany six
years earlier, had his citizenship revoked
in March 2007 after a federal judge con-
cluded that Kalymon took part in wartime
violence against Jews and lied about it to
immigration authorities.
Kalymon's lawyer, Elias Xenos, told
the Detroit Free Press his client does not
deny being a UAP member, but that the
evidence against him — primarily a 1942
report in which he purportedly accounted
to UAP superiors for ammunition he had
expended shooting Jews — is a forgery.
Xenos said his client, who is in poor health
with prostate cancer, did not participate in
any violence against Jews.
A removal order against Kalymon was
filed in U.S. Immigration Court in August.
A hearing is set for Oct.13 to determine
how to proceed on deportation.
Madonna Visits Kotel
Jerusalem/JTA — Madonna made a
late-night visit to the Western Wall.
Accompanied by bodyguards, Madonna on
Aug. 30 visited Judaism's holiest site and
toured the attached underground tunnels. A
crowd of paparazzi followed the pop diva.
Madonna arrived in Israel accompanied
by her children for two concerts in Tel
Aviv. The concerts were the final perfor-
mances on her "Sticky and Sweet" tour.
She has not converted to Judaism.
City Of David
Jerusalem/JTA — Israeli archeologists
uncovered a large fortification likely
used by the Canaanites and dating to the
Middle Bronze period. The 26-foot-high
and very thick wall was likely used by
the Canaanites to protect the path to an
important water source, according to the
Israel Antiquities Authority.
The discovery, in the Walls Around
Jerusalem National Park in the City of David,
is "the first time that such massive construc-
tion that predates the Herodian period has
been discovered in Jerusalem," according to a
news release from the authority.
A small section of the wall was discov-
ered in 1909, but the recent excavations
determined how large the wall actually is.
Nearly 80 feet has now been uncovered, but
it is believed that it continues to run west-
ward beyond the part that was exposed.
The fortification will be revealed to the
public for the first time on Sept. 3 as part of
the 10th annual archaeological conference
on the discoveries in the City of David.
Shooter Charged
Washington/JTA — The man charged
with killing a security officer at the U.S.
Holocaust Memorial Museum made his
first appearance in court. James von
Brunn, who is charged with gunning down
guard Stephen Johns on June 10, was
wheeled into a hearing in a Washington
federal courtroom.
Previous hearings were delayed because
of the injuries von Brunn sustained from
the return fire of museum security officers
after the 89-year-old white supremacist
started shooting at the entrance to the
museum.
Prosecutor Nicole Waid said at the
hearing that von Brunn wanted to "send
a message to the Jewish community" that
the Holocaust was a hoax. She said von
Brunn had planned the shooting months
in advance and had set up funeral plans
and put his finances in order because
he expected to die in the attack, the
Washington Post reported.
Von Brunn objected to his lawyer's
request that Judge Reggie Walton order a
mental competency exam.
"Your Constitution guarantees me a
speedy and fair trial," he said, according to
media reports. "I'm a United States citizen,
and as a U.S. Naval officer, I swore to pro-
tect my country. I take my vows seriously"
The judge ordered the exam and that
von Brunn be detained pending trial. He
also delayed von Brunn's arraignment and
scheduled another hearing for Oct. 14.
Agriprocessors Trial
Cedar Rapids/JTA — The trial of four for-
mer top managers of the Agriprocessors
kosher meatpacking plant was moved out
of Iowa because of negative publicity. U.S.
District Court Judge Linda Reade moved
the trial from Cedar Rapids to Sioux Falls,
S.D.
The judge ruled that the negative pub-
licity about the case, and about former
Agriprocessors CEO Sholom Rubashkin,
was likely to cause potential jurors to be
biased against the defendants.
Earlier, Reade accepted the defense
request to postpone the trial until after the
High Holidays. The original start date of
Sept. 15 was put off to Oct. 13.
Rubashkin and his three co-defen-
dants have pleaded not guilty to charges
of violating federal immigration laws,
bank fraud, wire fraud and mail fraud.
Rubashkin, his co-defendants and his
father, Aaron Rubashkin, former owner of
Agriprocessors, face more than 9,000 addi-
tional charges of child labor law violations.
In July, SHF Industries purchased
Agriprocessors for $8.5 million. The new
owners told reporters that they plan to
reopen as a kosher plant in the near future.
'Nakba' Removal Upheaval
JerusalenilJTA— Israeli Arab leaders
threatened to "revolt" after Israel's educa-
tion chief said the word nakba would be
removed from their classrooms.
Education Minister Gideon Sa'ar made his
announcement on Aug. 30 as part of a brief-
ing on the start of the 2009-10 school year.
Nakba, which means catastrophe in
Arabic, is used in the Arab community to
describe the birth of the State of Israel.
Answering
Israel's Cr itics
The Charge
The Palestinian Fatah political confer-
ence last month approved a unanimous
resolution saying that Israel bears full
responsibility for the death of Yasser
Arafat.
The Answer
Although there was not a free flow of
information at the time Arafat's death,
most sources conclude he died of a
combination of blood disease and cir-
rhosis of the liver.
