According to NCYI Director of

Bahrain Ambassador Cancels
Ambassador Houda Nonoo, a Jewish
diplomat from the Arab country of
Bahrain, scheduled to appear at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield on June 25, has been forced
to cancel her appearance because of
diplomatic responsibilities.
In place of the ambassador's presen-
tation, the West Bloomfield JCC will
show the film Persepolis at 7:30 p.m.
Persepolis, nominated for an Academy
Award for Best Animated Feature and
a jury prizewinner at the 2007 Cannes
Film Festival, is based on Marjane
Satrapi's autobiographical graphic
novel about a girl coming of age dur-
ing the Iranian revolution.
Those who purchased tickets to
hear Houda Nonoo who do not wish
to see Persepolis may instead choose
tickets to any Lenore Marwil Jewish
Film Festival screening or a selected
event presented by the JCC's Seminars
for Adult Jewish Enrichment or have
their money refunded. For informa-
tion, contact the JCC's Jewish Life and
Learning Department, (248) 432-5692.

99 Complete Melton Studies
After two years of study, the 99 mem-
bers of the seventh graduating class of
the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School
of Metropolitan Detroit gathered
together with families and friends at
the Jewish Community Center for their
graduation (SinIum) ceremony on
June 17.
The Mini-School, a project of the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem, is the
largest pluralistic adult Jewish educa-
tion network in the world. Locally, it
is sponsored by Federation's Alliance
for Jewish Education and the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit.
The graduates are part of 3,000
students in 60 sites around the world
attending graduation ceremonies this
month. Over the last seven years, 700
adults in the Detroit Jewish community
have completed the Melton Program.
The evening was a culmination of the
study of Jewish history, ethics, philoso-
phy, customs and rituals.
Judy Loebl, director of the Mini-
School of Metropolitan Detroit, talked
about the graduates as role models
for their family and friends. Rabbi
Judah Isaacs, director of Federation's
Alliance for Jewish Education, chal-
lenged them to become ambassadors
throughout the community to cham-
pion the cause of Jewish education.
Keynote speaker was instructor
Rabbi Michele Faudem, who recently
relocated to Houston.
New Melton classes, including
classes for young adults and parents
with young children, will be starting
in the fall. For information, call (248)
642-4260, ext. 372, or at jewishde-
troit.org/melton.
