Yoz Through The Years

Frozen yogurt hangouts develop repertoire of 60 flavors, 40 toppings.

OTPOURRI
It has been 25 years since the
Yoz Yogurt store was in Somerset
Mall, Troy, where the original tart yogurt
product was introduced and gained such
wide popularity ... Only problem for
some was it not being fat-free or even low-
fat and having a high carb count.
As owners Suzy and Sonny Modiano
celebrate Yoz Yogurt's 21st anniversary in
West Bloomfield's Simsbury Plaza, 14 Mile
and Farmington roads, and 10th at their
second Yoz in Crosswinds Mall, Orchard
Lake Road and Lone Pine Road, West
Bloomfield, they give out much enthusi-
asm on the same item, but now, a totally
fat-free and even better tasting Yoz Tart ...
It is the rage of California and New York,
with only eight calories per ounce, low
carbs and no artificial sweeteners.
Hard to believe that this is the same
young Suzy Harris who lived across the
street in Oak Park when my son Scott was
born and came over to watch him have
his diaper changed ... Her parents, Art
and Ferne Harris, live in West Bloomfield's
Pebble Creek Condominiums.
Suzy's son, 26-year-old Jeremy Wolf,
is working on his Ph.D. at University of
California-Riverside ... Jeremy's fiancee,
who also moved from here to Riverside,
Melissa Keller, formerly worked many
years for Howard and Steve Tapper at
Tapper's Diamonds & Fine Jewelry in
West Bloomfield, and is the daughter of
Bloomfield Hills community-ites Paul and
Arlene Keller.
But back to Suzy and Sonny's Yoz
Yogurt, where so many folks "hang out"
on those hot (and not so hot) nights ...
while smacking away at the Yoz goodies
Yoz Tart comes in vanilla flavor, which
goes well with fruit toppings like rasp-

berry, strawberries, etc. ... and
many guys and gals also love to
top it with cereal or nut variet-
ies ... Its distinctively creamy
consistency also presents a tasty
lusciousness just by itself.
In the 21 years since open-
ing at Simsbury, Yoz Yogurt has
sold more than 5 million fat-
free yogurt items (cones, cups,
shakes, flurries, smothies, etc.)
... The 20 toppings number at
Simbury on 14 Mile has grown to about
40, for more than 60 revolving frozen
yogurt flavors ... In the 21 years at the
Simsbury location, over 21/2 million people
have come through the doors.
"See you at Yoz," open 360 days a year,
11-10, is more popular today than ever
before.
WITH THE "Coming Soon" temporary
sign up there, looks like. RJ's American
Grill, on the former Northwestern
Highway, Farmington Hills site of Chili's,
may soon be opened ... According to
operational vice-president Vince Asmar,
the classy-looking, 227-seater might fling
wide its doors within approximately 45
days, depending upon final inspections ...
After RJ's American Grill opens, full work
concentration is expected on the nearby
Mykonos Greek Tavern at the previous
Macaroni Grill locale ... Both are under
the same ownership.
IT HAS ALWAYS been a top world-class
restaurant receiving nationwide acco-
lades, but Rugby Grille in Birmingham's
Townsend Hotel took on a still higher
dimension with additions of Keith
Scholfield as director of restaurant opera-
tions and Executive Chef Jim Bologna ...
Both came on board in August of 2008.
Plus Rugby Grille, Keith also oversees

in-room dining, Townsend
Tea and the hotel's night spot,
the Corner ... Many recall
him as former senior partner
at the Matt Prentice Group,
responsible for Matt's restau-
rants, catering facilities and
delis ... He was Prentice's
managing partner for Plaza
Deli in Southfield and Deli
Unique of West Bloomfield
and Bloomfield Hills, plus
a major cog in the operation of Matt's
Northern Lakes Seafood Company in
Bloomfield Hills and No. VI Chop House
in Novi.
Jim manages and oversees all the food
goings-on at Townsend and was executive
chef at Morels/Shiraz in Bingham Farms
and Capital Grille in Troy ... He also holds
an associate's degree in culinary arts
from Schoolcraft Community College in
Livonia.
The new Rugby Grille menu has kept
several of its big tableside-prepared
favorites like steak tartare and Dover
sole, but also presents more lighter and
heart-healthy food along with new dishes,
including veal chop and beef short ribs in
its award-winning presentations.
Rugby's new decor, says Morris Shapiro,
Park West's Gallery director, gives a visual
balance between contemporary and tra-
ditional.
THOSE WHO KNOW about them have
nothing but words of praise ... Those who
don't are finding out that they should ...
They're the innovative baked goods that
Barbara Feldman puts out and packages at
her Indulge (248) 217-8402 ... Barbara's
beautiful baskets with the delicious yum-
mies, pecan-topped mini cinnamon rolls,
brownies, chocolate chip cookies, etc.,

are choice presentations ... She is the
daughter of former community stalwart
and respected political activist, the late
Maynard Feldman, and Betty Feldman.
HE'S COMING HERE to cut and
style his grandson's hair for his upcom-
ing wedding ... Also, of course, get in "a
little golf" during the three weeks that Al
Nettle will stay in the Detroit area he left
to retire and live in Florida ... Al is for-
mer co-owner of Charterhouse Barbers,
Southfield, and on West Bloomfield's
Boardwalk ... He'll groom bridegroom
James Anderson's hair at Clippers Salon
in Applegate Square, Southfield, where
Jimmy's mother, Kathy Anderson, is
Clipper's owner Hersh Gross' "Ms.
Everything" (cutting, coloring highlights,
manicuring, massaging, styling, baking,
windows, etc.) ... Al comes here June 17
for the June 27 wedding at Fox Hills Golf
& Banquet Center and may do a little side
hairstyling ... He's bringing his own scis-
sors and, of course, his golf clubs.

Central High is Sunday, Aug. 30, at Glen
Oaks Country Club, 13 Mile, Farmington
