Artful Musical
Members of Metro Detroit's
Jewish community take lead roles
in Sondheim production.
Suzanne Chessler
Special to the Jewish News
A
professional actress and an
actor who had one profes-
sional part — at the age of 12
— take the leads in this season's final
production staged by the Village Players.
Michelle Rott Rosenblum and Dr.
Gary LaKind, both of West Bloomfield,
appear in Sunday in the Park With
George, Stephen Sondheim's Pulitzer
Prize-winning musical inspired by the
painting A Sunday Afternoon on the
Island of La Grande Jatte by pointillist
painter Georges Seurat. It runs May 29-
June 14 at the Village Players Playhouse
in Birmingham.
In Act I, Rosenblum appears as Dot,
the model and lover of 19th-century
French painter Georges Seurat (LaKind),
who is obsessed with work and fail-
ing in romance. In Act II, Dot returns
to convince another George (LaKind,
again), the fictional American great-
grandson of the painter, to continue
with his own 20th-century works of art.
"I love musicals and art so this is a
great show for me says Rosenblum, 36,
who worked on New York stages after
graduating in theater from Eastern
Michigan University and studying at the
American Musical & Dramatic Academy
in New York.
"I have so much creative energy, and
this entire experience of working with
the cast of Sunday has been completely
joyful:'
Rosenblum, who returned to
Michigan two years ago as a full-time
wife and mother of two, was drama
supervisor at Tamarack Camps
and choir director at Adat Shalom
Synagogue before moving on to Off-
Broadway roles, film and TV work and
commercial assignments. She recently
has been the anthem singer for the
Pistons and the Tigers.
Rosenblum's interest in performance
came through her parents, recording
artist Vickie Carroll and trumpet player
Sheldon Rott. In New York, the actress
was cast in A Child of the Universe, The

"I took my daughter to a children's
play, and I decided I wanted to be
onstage again:' Rosenblum says. "I
looked up area auditions, and I tried
out for this musical:'
LaKind, a physician specializing in
occupational injuries, has always loved
musical theater and has a collection
of show tunes. He perpetually sings
around the house.
Although he appeared in a profes-
sional production of Oliver at the
Birmingham Theatre, LaKind stayed
away from the stage until two years
ago. He saw a Village Players audition
notice and was selected for the role of
Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar.
"I think musical theater is the
greatest form of entertainment;' says
LaKind, married and getting ready to
be a first-time dad. "I think this musi-
cal is spectacular as it explores two
artists trying to find themselves:'
LaKind, who works in Romulus
and is affiliated with Adat Shalom
Synagogue, also is interested in ani-
mal rights causes. He is a graduate of
the University of Michigan and the
College of Osteopathic Medicine at Des
Moines University.
"I love working with the people in
this show:' he says. "I hope I will have
more performance opportunities
with them!' H
Performances of Sunday in the Park With George are 8 p.m. Fridays-
Saturdays, May 29-June 13, and 2 p.m. Sundays, June 7 and 14, at the
