Remember The Ulpan?
Forty years ago this summer, Metro
Detroit teens spent the summer at the
first Detroit Summer Youth Ulpan in the
Carmel neighborhood of Haifa. They
studied Hebrew and learned about Israel.
"That very special summer absolutely
transformed our lives," recalls Elaine
Iden Cheshin, who later made aliyah and
raised a family in Israel. "What made it
different from every other youth pro-
gram of that era was the participation
of Israeli buddies — kids our own age
from the Haifa area who spent much of
those two months with us."
Recently, Cheshin decided it was time
to celebrate the good times of that long-
ago summer as well as its imprint. So
she enlisted the help of her sister, Tzviah
Idan, also in Israel, and two other Ulpan
participants, sisters Karen Stahl-Don
and Maureen Stahl (Richardson), who
now live in New York. The trio hopes
to reconnect with the group and hold
a reunion in Israel this summer. They

are in the midst of locating Americans
and Israelis who participated, including
counselors, teachers and support staff.

Ragtime Gets Local Touch
There was a lot of kvelling in the Jewish
community's Milgrom family recently
when former localite Marcia Milgrom
Dodge, now of New York City, received
rave reviews for her directing and cho-
reographing of a five-week revival of
the musical Ragtime at the Eisenhower
Theater in the Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
Attending the opening night per-
formance were Milgrom Dodge's
parents, Jackie and Myron Milgrom
of Southfield, and her sisters, Carol
Lasser and Paula Milgrom of West
Bloomfield and Marianne Bloomberg of

Farmington Hills. The elder Milgroms
hosted a family dinner before the show,
which runs through May 17.
The Washington Post and other D.C.
area publications praised Milgrom
Dodge's work with the 36-member cast
of Ragtime, calling it a "powerful, glori-
ous production!' The story covers the
travails of three intertwining ethnic
families in the mass immigration days
of 1906. Milgrom Dodge, a University
of Michigan graduate, has directed and
choreographed shows around the world.
Among celebrities attending the open-
ing were Jewish author E.L. Doctorow,
who wrote the original Ragtime book;
Terrance McNally, who wrote the book
for the musical, and others. "It was
a great night and we're really proud
of Marcia," beamed Myron Milgrom.
"Everyone told us she made Ragtime
even better and more lively than the
original Broadway version."

Quotable

"Entering the synagogue for the first
time, I was struck by the romance
of its ruinous state. Years of neglect
and water infiltration had resulted
in severe deterioration of the space.
Wood elements were splintered and
rotted. Plaster was detaching from
the walls. Almost all of the ceiling
had collapsed. Yet evidence of the
room's past use stood out in defiance
of this ruin."

Scouts Honor Survivors

For the seventh year, Jewish Boy
Scouts from the Metro Detroit
Area participated in the Governor's
Holocaust Memorial Ceremony held
at the Michigan State Capitol in
Lansing.
Scouts served as escorts to the
more than 80 Holocaust survivors
in attendance as well as serving
as honor guard for the ceremony.
Following the ceremony, the Scouts,
who are members of four area

tour of the Capitol with Eagle Scout
Senator Jason Allen followed by
a late lunch at the Michigan State
University Hillel.

who researched the history of a tiny

synagogue at Eastern State Penitentiary,

Philadelphia. The synagogue has been

restored and is open to the public. It is

believed to the first prison synagogue built

in the United States. It was built circa

1924 at the urging of Alfred Fleisher, a

Jewish businessman and philanthropist

who was president of the prison's board.

The prison was abandoned in 1971.

Restoration began in the 1980s.
