Letters
How to Send Letters
We prefer letters relating to JN articles. We reserve the right to edit or reject letters. Letters of 225 words or less are considered first. Longer ones will
be subject to trimming. Letter writers are limited in frequency of publication. Letters must be original and contain the name, address and title of the
writer and a day phone number. Non-electronic copies must be hand signed. Send letters to the JN: 29200 Northwestern Highway, Suite 110, Southfield,
MI 48034; fax (248) 304-8885; e-mail, letters@the jewishnews.com . We prefer e-mail.
What A Walk!
Worthy Experience
Thank you to all involved in the Detroit
Jewish community's 2009 Walk for Israel:
the sponsors (especially the Detroit Jewish
News and Temple Shir Shalom), the walk
committee, the mural project contributors,
the volunteers and the participants ("Yes,
Israel," May 7, page A13).
A special thanks to Andre Douville,
executive director of Temple Shir Shalom
in West Bloomfield. He deserves to be
acknowledged for the successful planning
and execution of the walk. He was willing
four years ago to take a chance with me
and the idea of re-establishing the walk
as a way to show, publicly, the communal
support for Israel. He took me under his
wing and guided me.
The walk is co-chaired by Andre
Douville and myself. In the future, our
walk titles will reflect that. Thank you,
Andre, for making the walk what it is.
An additonal partner in this venture has
been my wife, Cathy. I am grateful for
her special understanding.
Please join Andre and I at the 2010
Walk for Israel on May 2 to celebrate
Israel's 62nd birthday
My daughter, Lauren, recently had the
opportunity to participate in Congregation
Shaarey Zedek of Oakland County's
production of Hebrew School Musical
("Happy Endings," April 30, page A22).
It was a tremendous experience for the
more than 100 Shaarey Zedek youth of all
ages involved both on stage and behind
the scenes. Rabbi Eric Yanoff truly outdid
himself with his clever take on the popu-
lar play. He, along with co-producer Tobye
Bello, spent countless hours planning for
the May 3 performance and making cer-
tain it would be a positive experience for
each child involved. They were effectively
able to engage the group and created a
genuine enthusiasm for religious school.
For Lauren, one of the highlights was
meeting and getting to know students
from other grades and having the
opportunity to develop and strengthen
relationships throughout rehearsals and
the final production.
Hebrew School Musical was a great
success as evidenced by the huge smiles
both on stage and in the audience.
Thanks to the JN for covering this event
and to Shaarey Zedek for providing this
opportunity for our young performers.
It was an experience that Lauren will
not soon forget!

Start Of Something New
I participated in Hebrew School Musical
at Congregation Shaarey Zedek of
Oakland County, where I'm a fifth-grad-
er in the religious school. When Rabbi
Eric Yanoff announced that Shaarey
Zedek would be doing a play, he really
got me excited.
I scored the part of Morah Darbus,
the crazy Hebrew shool teacher. I could
tell this was going to be fun. During
rehearsals, we were very busy, constantly
singing, dancing and acting. I felt the
cast bonded in a way we never could
have while sitting in a Hebrew class. It
even made me sort of look forward to
attending Hebrew school! We laughed
and chatted, not only with the other
kids, but also the adults working tire-
lessly on the play. Finally, it was show
time. It was a huge success. Performing
at the Meer Apartments in West
Bloomfield was an added bonus: To be
able to bring to people something they
were missing out on really pleased me.
I would like to thank Tobye Bello and
Rabbi Yanoff for bringing the theater to
Shaarey Zedek. It was lots of fun.
Hopefully, this is the start of some-
thing new.
