nswer (Part. I. of 2): Dear
Julie, Eating healthy dur-
ing pregnancy is only one
part of pregnancy nutrition—the
other is avoiding foods that may
be harmful.

According to the Mayo Clinic
(and common sense), here are
some foods you want to avoid:
• Bigger/older fish like
swordfish, shark, king
mackerel, and tilefish that
N
the FDA has warned con-
1
tain significant accumu-
lations of mercury;
V
• To avoid ingesting
\
harmful bacteria or
viruses, stay away from
raw fish (e.g., sushi) and
shellfish, particularly
oysters and clams and
anything that you suspect
may have been caught in
polluted water;
• Refrigerated and smoked sea-
food is also off limits, unless it's
to be part of a cooked dish;
• During pregnancy, you may be
at increased risk from food poi-
soning, therefore, skip under-
cooked eggs, meats, poultry,
seafood, and unpasteurized
milk products.

-

Next time: Things that are OK to
eat (or eat in limited quantities)
when you're pregnant.
