Southfield Public Library's
annual Battle of the Books.
The Battle of the Books program
encourages reading by holding compe-
titions for fourth-grade, fifth-grade and
middle-school students who live in or
attend school in Southfield. Teammates
read seven assigned books of vari-
ous genres of which five questions are
asked per book.

Yeshivat Akiva's Readers and the
Leader Readers both placed first
out of 33 teams in the fourth-grade
battle held Jan. 29. First-place win-
ners receive gold medals, a visual
encyclopedia and their name engraved
on the Battle of the Books wall in the
Southfield Library youth room.
The Battle of the Books, an extra-
curricular activity, balances academ-
ics and teamwork. These students
volunteer to work together in order
to retain detailed information during
meetings scheduled after school and
on Sundays led by team captains.
