A huge crowd gathers at Wicked

to support JARC.

BY ROBIN SCHWARTZ I PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGIE BAAN

"Everyone deserves the chance to fly!" proclaimed the Wicked Witch of the
West as she levitated above the Detroit Opera House stage before a capti-
vated crowd. It just so happens that JARC believes that, too. The Farmington
Hills-based organization operates group homes and independent living
programs, enabling people with disabilities to live full, dignified lives. A
packed house of thousands filled the opera house for the group's fall fund-
raiser, a Dec. 11 performance of the Broadway musical Wicked. The show
tells the classic Oz story from the perspective of the Oz witches, set to the
music and lyrics of Stepheni Schwartz. A pre-glow dinner party was held for
young adults before the performance. "I loved the show," said Phil Okun of
Huntington Woods. "I'm glad to support such a wonderful organization."
