JTS Rabbi Visits

Rabbi David Ackerman,
national outreach
director for the Jewish
Theological Seminary
in New York, will
offer a study series
Wednesday-Thursday,

Feb. 4-5.
Ackerman

4, he will teach at the offices of Sun
Communities, 2777 Franklin Road, Suite
200, in Southfield. He will speak on "What
Really Happened at the Burning Bush"
with a close reading of Exodus 3. Dairy
lunch; walk-ins are welcome.
Wednesday evening Ackerman will
teach at a private home in Huntington
Woods on "Doing and Hearing, Na'aseh
v'Nishmah, and the Dilemmas of

"You Be the Judge, Part 2," which will
compare Jewish and secular law and dis-
cuss real cases that were brought before
Jewish courts.
Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg will teach
the class on Wednesday evenings, start-
ing Feb. 11, from 8-9:15 p.m. at the Torah
Center, 5595 Maple, in West Bloomfield.
Students will be provided with prima-
ry texts from the Talmud and will grap-
ple with the facts in order to arrive at
satisfactory solutions. No prior Talmudic
knowledge or formal legal training are

Bendit and Mark Bernstein with the
Claire and Isadore Bernstein Leadership
Award at "An Afternoon of Heart and

Rachel Bendit and Mark Bernstein

The award is given each year to mem-
bers of the Ann Arbor area who have
demonstrated outstanding community
service. The award will be presented
at a dessert reception at 2 p.m. in the
Michigan League Ballroom, followed
by JFS@UMS — a performance by the
Batsheva Dance Company of Israel at 4
p.m. in the Power Center.
Bendit and Bernstein serve both the
Jewish and secular communities, locally
and nationally, with their time and their
philanthropy. Bendit, a mediator and
attorney, volunteers with the Dispute
Resolution Center, the Women's Health
Program at the University of Michigan,
and the Jewish Federation of Greater
Ann Arbor. Bernstein, also an attorney, is
involved with the Michigan Association
for Justice, the Michigan Civil Rights
Commission, and the Jewish Federation
of Greater Ann Arbor.
The Claire and Isadore Bernstein
Leadership Award honors the founding
members of Jewish Family Services.
Proceeds from An Afternoon of Heart
and Sole" will support JFS's ongoing work
and a matching gift from Bendit and
Bernstein has established an Emergency
Aid fund to assist individuals and fami-
lies impacted by the economic crisis. See

Jewish Gay Network
Jewish Gay Network Family & Friends
will meet at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 3, in
the lower level library at the Jewish
Community Center in West Bloomfield.
This is a gathering of people who have
family or friends who identify as lesbian,
gay, bisexual, transgender or who are
questioning (LGBTQ) their sexual orien-
tation or gender identity.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
Meetings are free and take place at 7 p.m.
on the first Tuesday of every month.
Family and Friends is a program of
the Jewish Gay Network of Michigan. Its
mission is to serve gay, lesbian, bisexual
and transgender Jews, their families and
friends. JGN is an affiliated partner of
