How to Send Letters

We prefer letters relating to JN articles. We reserve the right to edit or reject letters. Letters of
225 words or less are considered first. Longer ones will be subject to trimming. Letter writers
are limited in frequency of publication. Letters must be original and contain the name, address
and title of the writer and a day phone number. Non-electronic copies must be hand signed.
Send letters to the JN: 29200 Northwestern Highway, Suite 110, Southfield, MI 48034; fax (248)
304-8885; e-mail, letters@the jewishnews.com . We prefer e-mail.

Let Good Guys Win
This should be a no-brainer. Whom
do you support? Terrorists or those
combating terrorism? Civilization or
those trying to destroy civilization?
Tyrants or those who oppose tyranny?
Violent criminals or law enforcement?
The vast majority of people, given a
choice, would pick the good guys over
the bad guys.
Except when it comes to Israel
and the Jews. The jihadists and their
friends in the news media want you
to believe that the terrorist-murderers
who have for years fired thousands
of missiles, rockets and mortars at
homes, schools and businesses in
order to inflict as much damage and
kill as many innocent men, women
and children as possible are the good
guys. And they want you to believe
that those protecting their democratic
country from annihilation and their
citizens from extermination are the
bad guys.
Gaza is ruled by brutal force by a
terrorist gangster enterprise called
Hamas. They are armed and danger-
ous. They have declared that their
main desire is to destroy their next-
door neighbor, Israel, and to kill the
Jews. To that end, they have illegally
amassed a huge arsenal of weapons
and are waging a continual daily war
of hate and violence. How long must
the 250,000 people in range of Hamas'
missiles live in fear and endure the
daily bomb threats? No sane, respon-
sible nation would tolerate these daily
assaults on its people and its land.
After so many years of restraint, it's
about time Israel defended itself. Let
Israel defeat Hamas and put an end
to their crimes. Allow the citizens of
southern Israel and the Arab settlers
of Gaza to live in peace.

Rabbi's Vision
The Holocaust Memorial Center in
Farmington Hills will stand as an
ongoing legacy from Rabbi Charles
Rosenzveig and to his never-end-
ing singular vision ("Keeper Of The
Flame Dec. 18, page A13).
Among the many programs he
sponsored was an opportunity for
Holocaust survivors to tell their sto-
ries.
Thus, it has been my and other
speakers' privilege for many years to
be a survivor speaker at the center;
and it was through this venue that we

have addressed hundreds of people,
young and old, to tell them about our
experiences.
The response my colleagues and
I time and again received was one
of intense interest, of intense appre-
ciation and sympathetic feeling for
what happened during this dreadful
period.
The bond we have been able to
establish with our visitors resulted in
a newly discovered, deep understand-
ing of the cause, circumstances and
impact of the Holocaust years. It was
and is, as confirmed by the numerous
calls and letters we got, a tremendous
eye-opener for the many persons to
whom we speak.
We are indeed fortunate to have had
Rabbi Rosenzveig in our midst and for
conceiving the idea of the memorial
center — thus providing the opportu-
nity to tell our stories.

The Wrong Venue
Normally, I would consider the article
about the Jewish Cigar and Shooting
Club as one describing a hobby club
("Shooting Stars," Dec. 25, page A24)
and as a pleasant human interest story.
I must take issue with one part of
this story, however, concerning Stu-
art Weiss's comments about being
mystified by the Jewish aversion to
guns.
Since I was the person who "flipped
out" and challenged his promotion of
this group in our shul, Congregation
Bais Chabad of West Bloomfield, I
want to clarify that I do not oppose the
constitutional right to bear arms. This
group, however, also promotes smok-
ing; and it is a political group.
I was a past president of Bais
Chabad during its early, formative
years; we worked very hard to develop
a congregation that provides a spiri-
tual environment and opportunities
for Torah study that is welcoming to
all people in the Jewish community;
and we are blessed that our congrega-
tion has flourished.
Anyone is certainly free to pursue
one's own private interests and to
promote an interest group like this
privately. To use our synagogue, or
any other synagogue for that matter,
to promote personal private interests
and a political point of view is simply
inappropriate.
