better promoting

services.
Their public
pitch was for a
three-tier action
Rabbi Roman
plan: prayer, polit-
ical activism and programming.
Syme was delighted that the
group went beyond the obvious
power of prayer and called for
political activism, which, he said, is
part of the prophetic tradition of all
the faiths represented.
He acknowledged that bankrupt-
cy is one solution to solving the Big
Three's dollar deficit, but not the
wisest course. "We're dealing with
men, woman and children — real
people who have articulated their
pain to their government and, in a
lesser way, to their clergy. I think
it would be remiss if we did not
speak out strongly for an economy
recovery program at this moment."

Saving Jobs
President-Elect Barack Obama
has a goal of 2.5 million new jobs
during his first two years in office,
Syme said. "So it hardly makes
sense to allow our automakers to go
bankrupt and start the administra-
tion further behind in pursuit of
that goal."
If General Motors, Ford and
Chrysler fail, at least 3 million
jobs in the factories and support
industries could vanish, according
to some estimates.
November saw a loss of 533,000
jobs in the country — the largest
monthly jump in joblessness since
1974, the U.S. Department of Labor
announced Friday. The national
unemployment has climbed to 6.7
percent.
Cardinal Maida called the meet-
ing at the request of United Auto
Workers President Ron Gettelfinger,
who was seeking the collective
voice of the religious community
in advance of the congressional
vote on short-term loans to the Big
Three.
"All in all," said Syme, "I thought
it was a very powerful meeting. The
spirit in that room was palpable."
Syme shared the message of
the Archdiocese of Detroit-hosted
meeting with the local Council of
Black Baptist Pastors at Corinthian
Baptist Church in Hamtramck on
Tuesday. O
