can relate to. Krosnick grew up in
Oak Park and was a former Young
Adult Division director for the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
He compares Beersheva's river project
to Detroit's efforts to develop a river-
front downtown.
"The Detroit River has been for
industry, not for recreation and its
citizens," Krosnick said. "It was engi-
neered to move steel. It's an eyesore
and an environmental issue. But with
the [Detroit Riverfront] Conservancy,
property has been bought; it's been
cleaned up [and park space has been
added].
"Detroit has been beaten up about
it for years, and so has Beersheva.
Both can come back and redevelop!"
Freeman said the biggest challenge
of the project has been to get people
to believe it could happen.
"It's the belief in the project —
people look at the long-range project
as unreal: he said.
His trips to Detroit and other cities
help him create a local identity for the
project.
In addition to overseeing the
detailed economic planning pro-
cesses of this huge undertaking, he
also is responsible for coordinating
the fundraising effort from govern-
ment, philanthropic and private-sec-
tor sources as well as overseeing the
project steering committee work. He
previously served as environmental
projects manager for Shikma-Besor
River Authority, where he worked on
desert river rehabilitation projects.
In Detroit, Krosnick said, "There's
been special interest in marrying
environment issues with Israel. The
Detroit Jewish community always has
been the backbone of supporting and
giving to Israel. JNF can count on this
community for the work we need to
do to make the Negev in the image of
Ben-Gurion. At the Tree of Life dinner
in September, the honorees started
the relationship between the Detroit
community and Beersheva. I look
forward to that partnership in the
coming years!'
Tree of Life honorees, IN Publisher
Arthur Horwitz and his wife, Gina,
targeted the river project specifically.
About $200,000 was raised that night.
(See accompanying sidebars, page A14.)
The 107-year-old JNF had a strong
fundraising year, raising a total of $56
million in fiscal 2007, up from $16
million just eight years ago.
For Freeman, the funding portion
lightens the load of the planning. It
was after JNF America became the
frontrunner in fundraising that other
JNF branches around the world start-
ed to take notice.
"JNF America took a leading role
since 2006, and since then the project
has had major, major progress, we'd
been working on it since 1998. After
JNF America took a leading role, JNF
worldwide — Australia, Canada,
Switzerland all took notice — espe-
cially Montreal: Freeman said.
And, unlike Americans who some-
times tiptoe around funding and
money issues, Freeman calls it like it
is: "I work with JNF branches in the
States to market my project. The pro-
fessional staff find the people [to raise
money]; everyone can relate to these
projects. It is simple. You bring the
money, next year you come and you
see something done with it!'
