FRED MARRICH, 92, of West
Bloomfield, died Oct. 30, 2008.
He showed a natural instinct for
marketing in the professional music
world. After service in World War II, he
was unable to develop a law practice so
he returned to the family music busi-
ness, founded in 1916 by his father.
Mr. Marrich collaborated with the best
players and educators to improve and
design innovations in the bassoon and
tuba, which changed the way these
instruments could be played.
In the early 1970s, Mr. Marrich
opened the American professional flute
world with the Japanese Muramatsu
Flute, which led to foreign flutes now
being used by American professionals.
Mr. Marrich is survived by his wife,
Lillian Rosenberg Marrich; daughters
and son-in-law, Susan and Sidney
Hantler of New York, Robyn Marrich
of Hawaii; son and daughter-in-law,
Dr. Larry and Debbie Marrich of New
Mexico; grandchildren, Jonathan and
