Temple Shir Shalom hosts renowned stained glass designer as artist-in-residence.
Mordechai Rosenstein of Philadelphia and Ron Ogusky of Sylvan Lake
W Nether he's physically there or not, Mordechai Rosenstein's presence
radiates through the lobby of Temple Shir Shalom in West Bloomfield.
The Philadelphia-based artist, considered one of the leading stained glass
designers in the country, created the temple's six 17-foot stained
glass panels that vividly capture the spirit of Shabbat and the
Jewish holidays.
"The windows are phenomenally beautiful:' said Carol
Ogusky of Sylvan Lake. "There are 12 stars for the 12 tribes or
the 12 months of the year. The colors and design are uplifting
and full of joy."
Ogusky chaired an artist-in-residence weekend Oct. 24-26 wel-
coming Rosenstein back to the temple to share his other works
and philosophy with the community. Events included a Shabbat
dinner and services, a Saturday morning study group, an eve-
ning wine, cheese and dessert reception and a Sunday brunch
where Rosenstein worked with fourth- and fifth-grade students
Fran Bell of Orchard Lake, Pam Kornfeld of West Bloomfield and Carol Ogusky of
Sylvan Lake
doing art projects. Some of the Jewish art he's created over the last 30 years was for sale
and on display.
"It's very stimulating and rewarding to interact with members and communities
throughout the country and develop a rapport with them:' Rosenstein has said during
previous synagogue visits.
The Hebrew alphabet is central to Rosenstein's works. The artist, who studied at the
Philadelphia College of Art, developed his unique style by uniting his interest in Judaica
and painting. Synagogues across the country have commissioned him to create win-
dows, ark doors, Torah mantles and memorial walls.
"He's extremely engaging, colorful, and full of life Ogusky said. "Just like his art."
