Gay In The Holy Land

Ann Arbor — Danny Savitch, one
of Israel's most prominent activists
for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-
gender (LGBT) rights, will speak at
the University of Michigan at 7 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 23, in the Michigan
Union Anderson Room.
Savitch is co-founder of the
Jerusalem Open House (JOH), one
of the largest LGBT organizations
in the Middle East. A lawyer by
profession, Savitch volunteered
as the legal adviser to the JOH for
many years and successfully argued
before the Israeli Supreme Court,
overturning the ban on Jerusalem
Gay Pride. Savitch is also the
executive director of Israel's largest
Reform Jewish synagogue, Kehiliat
Kol HaNeshama, one of the few
congregations in Israel with a vis-
ible and active LGBT presence.
Throughout his visit, Savitch will
discuss grassroots activism and
LGBT equality in Israel. "I really
think that bringing in someone
who can engage people from these
two backgrounds, the LGBT com-
munity and the Jewish community,
is something unique and excit-
ing:' said Ahava co-chair Mitchell
Crispell."It's the bringing together
of two groups of people who don't
always relate in this way."
Savitch will attend classes in
the School of Social Work and
Literature, Science & Arts.
Savitch's Oct. 23 lecture is free
and open to the public. This
event is sponsored the American
Movement for Israel, Ahava, the
LGBT Commission of the Michigan
Student Assembly, the University
of Michigan Spectrum Center, the
Jewish Gay Network of Michigan
and the Union for Progressive
Zionists.
