Exhibit bonds Jews, Wayne State U.
E
ach day, thousands of Wayne
State University students
and faculty enter campus
buildings not aware they're named for
Jewish contributors.
The often colorful lives of these
philanthropic Detroiters are part of
a new exhibit, "Bricks, Mortar and
More: The Jewish Community and the
Growth of Wayne State University,"
opening Friday, Oct. 31 at WSU's
Walter P. Reuther Library of Labor and
Urban Affairs, Detroit.
Co-sponsored by the Reuther
and the Leonard N. Simons Jewish
Community Archives of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit,
the exhibit runs through Feb. 4.
From their respective archives, both
sponsors have located photographs
and documents that recognize the
lives and contributions of those who
have created landmarks of lasting
value at the university.
The oldest of these structures is the
Max Jacob House, a home built in 1915
and returned to glory as the residence
of the WSU president. Renowned
architects Minoru Yamasaki and
Albert Kahn designed two buildings,
the Helen L. DeRoy Auditorium and
what is known today as the Leonard
N. Simons Building of WSU Press.
Other buildings house classrooms,
research labs, libraries and recre-
ational facilities. Some were named
for entrepreneurs who left school at a
young age to help their families dur-
ing the Depression. Others are Wayne
alumni who gave back once they
became successful.
The newest structure highlighted
in the exhibit is the Marvin I. Danto
Engineering Development Center, to
be dedicated in December. It's named
for furniture retailing pioneer Marvin
Danto, who left his engineering stud-
ies at Wayne to serve in the U.S. Army
in World War II. The research center
will further R&D in the fields of bio-
tech, nano-science and alternative
energy technology.
The exhibit is open at no charge
at the Reuther Library, 5401 Cass,
Detroit, Monday-Tuesday 9-7 and
Wednesday-Friday, 9-5. For infor-
mation on group tours, call Sharon
Alterman, director of the Leonard N.
Simons Jewish Community Archives,
