U.S. Supreme Court
I do not believe that the country has
been well served by President Bush's
two very conservative nominations
to the Supreme Court. As a result, the
Court sits at a tipping point. Hanging
in the balance are fundamental consti-
tutional principles relating to separa-
tion of church and state, a woman's
right to choose, protection for the
environment, and the reach of presi-
dential power. One way or the other,
the next president will fundamentally
change the Court and America for
decades to come.
Never Forget
For humanity to avoid repeating the
tragedies of the past, we must begin
with remembrances and education.
The founding values of this country
require that we lead such efforts, and
to lead in efforts to halt crimes against
humanity. Congress has repeat-
edly acted to address the genocide
in Darfur, but executive leadership
is required. The United States simply
must do more to halt these atrocities.
The new administration must play a
more active role in leading the interna-
tional community's response, includ-
ing greater support for the United
Nations — African Union Mission in
Darfur (UNAMID). Finally, we must
press China to use its unique lever-
age with Khartoum end the Sudanese
government's obstruction of UNAMID.

I am pro-choice and I very much favor
stem cell research. We must unlock
this potential to cure and treat debili-
tating diseases. I am also a strong
advocate of increasing funding for all
federal medical research.
Immigration
There is no doubt that our immi-
gration system is broken. A lack
of resources on the border allows
undocumented immigrants to cross
into our country unhindered. Our
government also lacks the ability to
adequately detect and prevent unau-
thorized employment. The first step in
immigration reform must be stronger
border security. This common sense
step must also be accompanied with a
more secure, more sensible and fairer
system of legal immigration.
Michigan
As chair of the trade subcommit-
tee, my top priority is to change U.S.
trade policy so it stands up for U.S.
businesses and workers in the global
marketplace. We must enforce trade
agreements, stop unfair trading
practices hurting our businesses and
establish new rules of competition
in the global marketplace to address
worker rights and environmental
issues. I'm also fighting for federal
funding to help the auto industry and
parts suppliers retool their plants to
produce advanced-technology vehicles
and I want to expand the Research and
Development Tax Credit, which is vital
to industries across our state.
Humanitarian Outreach
Rising food prices in our country
continue to strain household bud-
gets as well as the effectiveness of
our food assistance programs. In
light of the soaring food prices, Rep.
Herseth Sandlin of South Dakota
and I have spearheaded an effort to
increase funding for the Commodity
Supplemental Food Program, which
provides monthly nutritious food
packages for low-income seniors,
women and children. I also support
increased funding for food stamps and
am the author of legislation to encour-
age businesses to donate food inven-
tory to food banks and other hunger-
fighting organizations.
