religion, or prohibiting the free exercise

AT ISSUE
Israel
The United States-Israel relationship
must remain strong to protect and
promote freedom and liberty in the
Middle East. We must increase aid
and military support to defend our
country's mutual security interests. I
believe that the United States should
not be directly involved in peace talks
that encourage Israel to shrink its
borders or reduce its sovereignty. The
United States should assist Israel in
defending herself, and if an agree-
ment is reached, work with the United
Nations or European Union to be sure
the agreement is enforced.
Never Forget
I believe the United States has done a
good job in advancing and promoting
Holocaust education efforts by pro-
viding federal funding for Holocaust
museums and memorials. I do not
believe the United States has an obli-
gation to be a world police force, and
we should not send troops to foreign
lands where genocide is taking place.
However, working with the United
Nations, I believe that the U.S. could
help fund and staff such actions as a
global effort.
Iran
I do not believe that Iran should
be allowed to have a nuclear
weapon. However, I do not agree with
preemptive strikes without exhausting
all diplomatic options. If Iran were
to attack Israel or the U.S., we should
retaliate severely. If Israel decides to
strike Iranian nuclear sites, the U.S.
should be prepared to help defend her
when Iran or other nations strike.
Immigration
We are a nation of immigrants. It is
what makes our county unique and
what has allowed us to be a shining
city on a hill to the rest of the world.
I believe that immigrants should be
given the opportunity to be granted
U.S. citizenship so long as they do so
legally. Illegal immigration needs to be
stopped, and it must begin by effec-
tively securing our borders.
Gun Control
I support the second amendment
and believe it is the right of every
American to own a gun if he so
chooses to do so.
Michigan
Unemployment rates in Michigan's
12th congressional district continue
to rise, and the number of small busi-
nesses closing down are following suit.
More than 9 percent of my district
lives below the poverty line, a number
that includes more than 4,500 children
and seniors right in our backyards.
To make matters worse, our district's
unemployment rate is nearly double
the U.S. average at over 10 percent.
This is unacceptable and the time
for change is this year. As your con-
gressman, I'll work hard to generate
new business models that fit well
within our district's infrastructure
and workforce. We'll reach out to new
technology and manufacturing indus-
tries, such as alternative fuel sources
and green energy creation methods,
advanced military equipment devel-
opment and manufacturing, and to
help convert dormant regions into
renaissance districts, promoting tour-
ism and helping to attract families
and college graduates to live and work
within our district.
Homeland Security
The most important things we can do,
right now, to protect our homeland
is to secure our borders, stop illegal
immigration, further develop cur-
rent and possible means of domestic
energy productivity reducing our
dependence on foreign oil, and be
sure that our National Guard units are
never deployed overseas, but retooled
and trained to defend the homeland
and respond to emergencies.
U.S. Supreme Court
A judge should not be a legislator. I can-
not and will not support a nominee that
has not demonstrated over the course of
their career that they have consistently
defended and enforced the Constitution
of the United States and have not
attempted to interpret the law according
to a popular cultural standards. I sup-
port the separation of church and state
as it was written: Congress shall make
no law respecting an establishment of
