Countering Terrorism

T
he reason the United States
has not been attacked again
by terrorists since 9-11 is that
"your country went on the offensive
and took the fight to Afghanistan and
Iraq;' an expert in the field of home-
land security and counter-terrorism
told a group of American Technion
Society officials and supporters in
Farmington Hills last week.
Professor Boaz Golany, dean of
engineering in the William Davidson
Faculty of Industrial Engineering
and Management at Technion-Israel
Institute of Technology in Haifa, said
elements in those two countries,
known breeding places for Al Qaida,
believed perpetrators of the 9-11
attacks, have been busy fighting wars
to defend themselves and apparently
no longer have the resources to launch
international attacks that take a long
time to plan or carry out.
"And one reason suicide attacks in
Israel have diminished is that Saddam
Hussein's government is no longer
around to give a $20,000 reward to the
surviving families of young suicide
bombers:' he added.
Golany declined to speculate as to
which of the two main U.S. presiden-
tial candidates would be better for the
defense and security of the United
States and relations with Israel.
Golany also said he's positive the
United States wouldn't hesitate to enter
Pakistan to try to catch terrorist leader
Osama bin Laden, believed to be hid-
ing along the Pakistan-Afghanistan
border.
"The U.S. has been working on e-
mails, cell phone conversations and
other technical information to pin-
point bin Laden, but it's very difficult
to catch the leaders:' he said. "World
War II ended in four years. This is still
going on seven years after 9-11.
"And I just don't know why the
United States lets a person like
Ahmadinejad [Iran president)]into
this country to attend U.N. meetings
and give speeches; it's beyond my
understanding."
A veteran of the Israeli Defense
Forces and a security consultant
for many Israeli and U.S. agencies
and companies, Golany is the co-
principal investigator of a new joint
Technion-Yale University project
sponsored by New York real estate
developer and philanthropist Daniel
Rose. In the three-year partnership,
top researchers from Technion and
Yale are exploring strategic tactical
and operational problems in home-
land security and counter-terrorism.
