rorists," he explained. The project
was announced in conjunction
with Israel's 60th birthday. The
ATS raises about $85 million
annually for the university.
One new piece of technology,
Golany revealed, is a suicide bomb-
er detection system — about three
years from implementation — that
can identify people carrying bombs
or weapons by using a combination
of computers, machines, cameras
and radar.
"We're working now to inte-
grate the systems into a device to
be placed at checkpoints and, for
example, spot a woman carrying
a bomb in a shopping bag into a
mall," he said. "Ultimately, it will
be unnecessary to stop and search
the many innocent Palestinians
and others. This has a detrimental
effect on the economy"

Continuous Terror
Golany said Israel experiences three
to four acts of terrorism weekly,
"but unless there are casualties, the
international news media rarely
reports them, such as an attack in
Jerusalem the other day when a few
people were wounded:"
In his presentation, he pointed
out there have been 431 unsuc-
cessful attacks and 135 successful
attacks since 2000.
He described the main penetra-
tion area as a 650-mile stretch of
border on the West Bank between
Israel and Jordan. About 35 miles of
that segment is protected by a new
wall, "but you would think from
press reports that we have a Berlin
Wall-type of structure all around
the country"
He showed a typical checkpoint
as having patrol vehicles, cameras,
barriers, barbed wire fences, a deep
ditch along the road, and even a
path of smooth black dirt to detect
footprints.
"Security in Israel is a serious
challenge he said. "Unlike a regu-
lar war between countries, you're
dealing with no clear enemy on a
`battlefield' with no boundaries;
the enemy has no uniform with no
chain of command," he observed.
"It's a very difficult situation. Our
new project will be of immense
help.
"With the support of Technion
and the famous Israeli know-how,
we will prevail."
