Dear
Bar , er
your article
last week on
sugar, I was
wondering
about sugar intake and young
children. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Rochelle.
A
nswer Dear Rochelle,
Pre-schoolers and young
children (roughly ages
2-5) should eat an age-appro-
priate balanced diet. A balanced
diet consists of foods from all the
USDA "pyramid" food groups:
grains, vegetables, fruits, oils,
milk, and meats & beans in the
proper dietary proportions (for
a much more detailed look at the
USDA food pyramid and its age-
specific recommendations,
explore: www.mypyramid.
gov/pyramid/index.html).

*Some begin Havdalah 60 minutes after sunset

All carbohydrates are
broken down by the body
into glucose. Nutrition-
ally speaking, young
children should get
about 50%-60% of
their calories from
(mostly unrefined) car-
bohydrates.
Added sugar (e.g., found
in candy, sweetened bever-
ages, cakes, and cookies) is not
inherently evil; however, because
sugar is high in calories and low
in nutritional benefits, excessive
intake can lead to weight gain and
tooth decay, among others.
Moderation is the key: a child's
sugar intake should be limited to
less than 25% of daily calories.
