Mark Spitz got his first taste
of Olympic-like competition
in the World Maccabiah Games, which
are held in Israel every four years, when
he was just 15.
The annual JCC Maccabi Games
provides a similar Olympic-like oppor-

athletes and 600 coaches taking part in
the opening ceremonies of the 2008 JCC

"It's a very special time for all of you:'
Spitz said in remarks Sunday night

Spitz exhorted the 13- to 16-year-

dreams and make new friends.
He also talked about his awe for

"He wasn't even born when I won
seven gold medals; Spitz said. "I'm the

"The difference between greatness
and mediocrity is what you witnessed
with Michael swimming',' Spitz added.

satisfied that you are a better person."
Spitz reiterated the Olympic credo.
"Each of you will have an opportunity
to go swifter, higher and stronger; he
said. "If you meet that challenge, you
will be no different than the Olympic
