The annual JCC Maccabi Games provides a similar Olympic-like oppor- tunity, Spitz, now 56, told the 2,700 athletes and 600 coaches taking part in the opening ceremonies of the 2008 JCC Maccabi Games in Metro Detroit this week. Spitz won seven gold medals in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. "It's a very special time for all of you:' Spitz said in remarks Sunday night at the Palace of Auburn Hills. "The Maccabi Games is an opportunity for each and every one of you to develop your own individual success stories, regardless of the sport:' The Maccabiah Games gave him his first chance to compete internation "That allowed me to understand what it was like to have a dream to go to the Olympic Games," he said. Spitz, a Los Angeles resident, is here to watch his son, Justin, 16, play basket- ball as a member of the Los Angeles- Milken JCC delegation. Spitz exhorted the 13- to 16-year- old Maccabi athletes to pursue their dreams and make new friends. He also talked about his awe for American swimming star Michael Phelps, 23. Phelps just broke Spitz's 36- year-old gold medal record by winning eight gold medals in Beijing. "He wasn't even born when I won seven gold medals; Spitz said.
