Detroit native shoots family film
about Little League baseball miracle.
B
ryan Greenberg saw lots of
films while working as an
usher at the Livonia Cinema,
and soon local movie patrons — along
with cinema fans around the country
— will get to see a feature film that he
shot during his varied camera career.
The Perfect Game, a motion picture
based on a true story about a baseball
team in the Little League World Series,
stars Clifton Collins Jr., Emilie de Bavin
and Cheech Marin. It showcases a
Mexican team that triumphed beyond
any of the players' or the parents'
dreams in the face of discrimination in
the 1950s.
"We started with a script that
basically was for kids, and we tran-
scended that into a more adult film,"
says Greenberg, 58, a California resi-
dent who learned essential skills in
Michigan. "This is the kind of film that
a father and son could see together and
have a real bonding experience. It's an
inspirational, heartfelt movie.
"When I read the script, I noticed
many positive elements so I began
looking forward to bringing something
to the screen that wasn't necessar-
ily what I'd shot before — cars being
blown up, buildings being set on fire
and people being chased."
Greenberg, whose feature film cred-
its include The Betsy and I Like to Hurt
People, worked with director Bill Dear,
an early mentor also rooted in the
Metro Detroit area.
"This wasn't a heavy effects film, so
I set each shot and had Bill sign off on
it:' Greenberg explains. "I made sure
that what I did was what I thought he
wanted.
"I'm a member of the Visual Effects
Society and worked on Titanic and
other effects films, but The Perfect
Game only had the effects of audience
replacement. We shot the film with
very small crowds in the stands, know-
ing that we would add the crowds later
with the help of technology."
Greenberg, who has worked on six
feature films, has shot more than 100
music videos and commercials. When
he started working in Michigan, his
focus was on news.
"While I was an usher, I never
thought about camera work as a
career," he recalls."I thought I knew a
lot about the process and what films
