L
ocal fans of caustic come-
dian Chelsea Handler can
just about get their fill of her
politically incorrect humor this sum-
mer — watching her late-night TV
show, visiting her MySpace site, read-
ing her latest book and seeing her in
person.
The talk-show host of Chelsea
Lately and author of the New York
Times bestseller Are You There Vodka?
It's Me Chelsea (Simon Spotlight
Entertainment; $24.95) will perform
her standup routine 8 p.m. Saturday,
Aug. 9, at the Meadow Brook Music
Festival in Rochester.
The no-holds-barred entertainer, if
she holds true to her TV persona and
writing style, is likely to joke about
pop culture, entertainment news and
her own image — heavy with jabs.
She has performed at the Montreal
Comedy Festival and the HBO Comedy
Arts Festival in Aspen.
Those who haven't seen her can
get an introduction by visiting www.
myspace.com/chelseahandler.
"I consider myself a very obnoxious
person;' writes Handler, 33, whose
second book supports her statement
with essays designed to describe in
detail a raucous family, off-the-wall
friends and raunchy incidents of her
own making.
"I am very sympathetic to why
foreigners think Americans are loud
and obnoxious. Many of us, including
myself, are."
The title of the new Handler book
is a takeoff on a Judy Blume book
title, Are You There God? It's Me
Margaret. The comedian's first book,
My Horizontal Life, was published in
2005, selling as a tell-all of her sexual
encounters.
Handler, self-described as the
youngest of six children of a Jewish
father and Mormon mother settled
in New Jersey, is linked romantically
with Ted Harbert, CEO of the Comcast
Entertainment Group, which includes
E!, the network that carries her pro-
gram.
Handler seems happy to appear
with her competitors for late-night
audiences and has made guest appear-
ances on the Tonight Show and Late
Night With David Letterman. This past
June, she was profiled on Nightline.
"I consider myself Jewish, but I
don't really practice it:' she told Kristin
Tillotson in the Minneapolis-St. Paul
Star Tribune. "I'm not a very religious
person, although I do believe in God
and karma and tipping well."
Handler's career includes four sea-
sons as star of Girls Behaving Badly on
the Oxygen network and the Chelsea
Handler Show on E! She has co-
starred in several independent films,
including Steamroom and National
Lampoon's Cattle Call.
The outspoken entertainer also
has been a guest on TV's My Wife &
Kids, The Bernie Mac Show and The
Practice.
Regardless of her unflattering por-
trayals of her dad, she characterizes
him as one of her top fans.
"My father thinks it's so funny
that I'm so out there and just have
no qualms about letting all my dirty
laundry hang out," she says. "It's all
in a funny tilt, and I think he likes
that aspect of it because he's a very
funny person. He likes that I can take
a humiliating experience and turn it
into a joke'
