DEMI-DISPLAY
At the end of the art fair season comes a show that's a little more condensed than
most but still has 75-90 juried artists from around the country. The 34th annual
Art on the Lake runs 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, at the Northfield Hills
condominium complex, located at 1750 Brentwood Dr., in Troy. With display
booths set up along the water's edge, visitors will be able to see all kinds of media
and not have to walk very far. Close by will be a children's booth, where face
painting and crafts can be enjoyed. Fun food will include hot dogs, chips, pop
and ice cream. Entertainment comes from a group of singers representing Gilda's
Club, where cancer patients and their families get to meet. A guitarist also will
perform. Free parking is ample. (248) 641-9070.

GOLF AND GIVING
The Karmanos Cancer Institute benefits from the 15th-annual Partners Golf
Classic planned for Monday, Aug. 25, at the Franklin Hills Country Club,
Franklin. Golfers can choose morning or afternoon tee times and attend individ-
ually or with established groups — all going for 18 holes. Morning sports enthu-
siasts ($425 per individual; $1,700 per foursome) start at 8 a.m. and get breakfast
and lunch, while afternoon players ($495 per individual; $1,980 per foursome)
start at 1:30 p.m. and are included in lunch and the awards dinner. Tickets can be
ordered by calling Stephanie Schwager at (313) 576-8112.

START YOUR ENGINES
With all the Labor Day
weekend activities filling
Detroit and suburbs, there's
one event that particularly
represents the heart of the
city — the Detroit Belle Isle
Grand Prix. While music
fans listen to the singers and
musicians of the Detroit
International Jazz Festival
and art enthusiasts visit Arts,
Beats & Eats in Pontiac, auto devotees can see the American Le Mans Series
and the IndyCar Series with proceeds going to improve and preserve Belle Isle.
Running Friday-Sunday, Aug. 29-31, the Grand Prix opens at 8 a.m. each morn-
ing. While some of the trials are free for observers, the races themselves have
a range of prices. The races will be supplemented by many car activities, some
linked to the Corvette Car Corral and the Porscheplatz — offering displays of
these sought-after vehicles. Volunteers, who welcome car fans to the event, will
receive some special perks. Get complete information and prices by calling
(866) 464-PRIX or going to the Web site, detroitgp.com .

ROLLICKING RUN
Runners, walkers, bikers and rollerbladers can get their September holiday week-
end off to a fast start by participating in the eighth annual Milford Labor Day
30K Festival of Races. The event, organized by the Huron Valley Running Club,
takes place Saturday, Aug. 30, beginning with registration 6:30-7:45 a.m. at
Baker's of Milford restaurant, where there will be food and entertainment after
the race is completed. Participation, costing $10-$42 depending on the level and
type of activity, can bring cash prizes to the best in certain groups. The course
goes through town and country to give a sense of the area. Volunteers are being
sought to oversee aid stations, course compliance and registration. The event's
proceeds will benefit sports programs at Milford High School. (248) 685-7580;
