nswer: Dear Pam, Ac-
cording to the U.S. Dept.
of Agriculture (USDA),
"Food stored constantly at 0 °
Fahrenheit (F) [or lower] will
always be safe. Only the quality
suffers with lengthy freezer stor-
age." The USDA assumes that
the food in question is stored in a
freezer that is able to main-
tain constant 0 ° F or lower,
which may not always be
the case for a refrigerator-

Dear
Bar , ques-
tions: (1) How
long is food
safe in the
freezer? (2)
When, if ever, is it safe to let fro-
zen food thaw on the counter at
room temperature? Thanks, Pam.
According to the USDA, "Foods
should never be thawed or even
stored on the counter, or de-
frosted in hot water." Thawing in
the refrigerator is the preferred
method. Cold-water or microwave
thawing are acceptable, if done
properly. I hope this helps.
