Harnessing the power of the wind and
the passion to make a difference, mem-
bers of the Great Lakes Yacht Club in
St. Clair Shores (founded by Jewish
sailors in 1952) set sail on Lake St. Clair
May 16-17 to "raise a sail and find a
cure" for leukemia, lymphoma and other
cancers. About 200 boaters took part in
the club's ninth-annual Leukemia Cup
Regatta; similar races are held across the
country.
"My wife's sister died from leukemia
as a child," said Mickey Bennett of West
Bloomfield, the club's vice commodore
who sailed his 30-foot Catalina in the
race. "So, this is an event that's close
to our hearts." Participants raised more
than $35,000 for the Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society of Michigan during
the weekend of racing, which also includ-
ed a regatta party, raffle and silent auc-
tion. Throughout the country, Leukemia
Cup Regattas have raised over $15 mil-
lion to support the society's mission.
"It's the most thrilling sport I've par-
ticipated in," Bennett said. "For those
who love sailing, it's a lifestyle; it's some-
thing we live for." --
