a the Detroit Zoo.
ARC's 10th annual SpringElation took
place in a new venue — the Detroit Zoo
in Royal Oak — with more than 1,400
guests of all ages taking part in an exclusive event
May 27 to raise money for the Merle and Shirley
Harris Children and Family Division.
"JARC is thrilled to celebrate SpringElation
Safari at the Detroit Zoo:' event co-chair Ron
Applebaum of Huntington Woods told the crowd.
"Thank you all for helping JARC provide vital
services for children with disabilities in our com-
munity"
Applebaum was joined by co-chairs David
Friedman of West Bloomfield and Lindsay Gross of
Franklin. The evening raised $400,000 forFarming-
ton Hills-based JARC.
More than 125 volunteers, including 40 Extreme
Teen volunteers, provided a Safari-inspired evening
featuring surprises. Highlights included animal-
costumed volunteers, a scavenger hunt with fun
prizes that included animal-print visors and sun-
glasses, non-stop music and dancing by StarTrax,
docent-led tram tours, dinner by Matt Prentice's
Milk & Honey, and Faces In The Air face painting.
SpringElation funds the majority of JARC's
Harris Children and Family Division that provides
services to children with any disability, such as
autism, developmental delays, physical and emo-
tional disabilities, and to their families. Services
include specialized in-home care, comprehensive
school inclusion services in Jewish day schools,
social clubs for teens and young adults, advocacy
on behalf of families to obtain public services
and benefits, and one-on-one training to develop
greater community independence.
