A

popular local economist
provided an insider's view
on transforming Michigan's
entrepreneurial community.
Keynoting the fifth annual Estate
Planners hosted by the American
Technion Society-Detroit Chapter,
David L. Littmann said:
"Michigan is not in a recession.
Michigan is in a trend decline based
on horrible economic policies pursued
in Lansing for decades. These poli-
cies have produced a non-competi-
tive business climate that continues
chasing human, financial and venture
capital from our borders:'
He added, "In the context of an
international comparison, beleaguered
Israel has a strong economy built on
weak fundamentals. Michigan is best
described as the obverse: a now-weak
economy built on formerly-strong
fundamentals."
In his May 21 talk, Littmann cited

three urgent reforms as pre-conditions
to restore Michigan's economic pre-
eminence:
• Phase-out of Michigan's personal
income tax, similar to nine other
states;
• Legislation to make Michigan a
right-to-work state (voluntary union-
ism) like 22 other states;
• Conversion to a part-time legisla-
ture, akin to 44 other states.
At the same time, Littman provided
the 90 people in attendance with an
intricate interpretation of his newest
passion: handwriting analysis and the
meaning behind our letter writing.
The science of graphology has been
studied by Israelis at the Technion-
Israel Institute of Technology for pur-
poses of security.
David and Esther Littmann visited
the Technion in November in prepara-
tion for his presentation. The Technion
is located in Haifa. ❑
