Elephant Expert
Killed In Ethiopia
Professor Jeheskel "Hezy" Shoshani, a
world-renowned researcher of elephants
at Addis Ababa University, was among the
victims of a minibus explosion May 20 in
the Ethiopian capital's downtown area.
Prof. Shoshani held both U.S. and Israeli
citizenship and his wife, Sandra, resides
in Bloomfield Hills. Burial was planned in
Israel.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry said it
remains unclear whether the explosion
was terror-related or if Prof. Shoshani was
aboard the minibus when it exploded.
Three people were killed and nine oth-
ers were injured in the explosion, which
occurred as the minibus was traveling on
the road which runs between the Hilton
Hotel and the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry.
The explosion appears to be the latest
in a series of terror attacks the Ethiopian
capital has seen, which the government
has blamed on extremists who are sup-
ported by neighboring country Eritrea.
Born in Tel Aviv, he became interested
in elephants after reading Burma Boy by
Willis Lindquist. His primary research
was the evolutionary biology of elephants,
their anatomy and physiology and how to
apply this knowledge to the understanding
of elephant behavior and ecology.
Prof. Shoshani taught at Wayne State
Professor Hezy Shoshani
University in Detroit, for about 25 years
and in recent years was a research assis-
tant at Cranbrook Institute of Science in
Bloomfield Hills. In 1977, he established
the Elephant Research Foundation (an
international nonprofit organization) and
was editor of its publication Elephant.
He published some 200 scientific and
some popular articles and was the editor
of two books.
In 2003, on an expedition to search
elephants, Prof. Shoshani almost lost his
life as one of his beloved research subjects
charged him, but miraculously he escaped
with only minor injuries.
He was and is the prime mover in cre-
ating the Elephant Research Foundation
Library and in the decision to move that
collection to Wayne State University
Libraries.

When the phone rings at The Ira Kaufman Chapel, it might
be a request for the day and time of a service, shiva
information and directions, or an inquiry regarding where to
send contributions in memory of a loved one.
It might also be a family member advising us of the death of
a loved one.
That is why—for nearly 70 years—The Ira Kaufman Chapel
has chosen NOT to have an answering service come
etween you and your call.
