Sam and Jean Frankel, 1998
a leader. But you don't see his name all
over the building — he wanted to be
anonymous.
"But those people who make things
happen knew to go to him:"
Samuel Frankel is survived by his
wife of 69 years, Jean Frankel; sons and
daughters-in-law, Stuart and Maxine
Frankel of Bloomfield Hills, Stanley

and George Nyman of Birmingham;

and Jennifer Frankel, Jacob Nyman,
Adam Nyman, Sarah Nyman; great-
grandchildren, Zev Frankel, Lindsay
Vondell, Jillian Vondell, Jackson Frankel,
Taylor Frankel; brother-in-law, Merwin
Grosberg; nieces and nephews.

of the late Tillie Mossman and the
dear brother-in-law of the late Doris
Grosberg, the late Norma Grant, the late

"Samuel Frankel's generos-
ity to the University and to
the Jewish community are
well known, but we in the
University's medical community
are also mourning the loss of
a great friend and benefac-
tor – especially in the area
of heart and vascular health
and research. By endowing
the Frankel Professorship in
Cardiovascular Surgery and
a research fund dedicated to
advancing knowledge in that
field, Sam and his wife, Jean,
made a true investment in the
future of medicine.
"It is especially fitting that
the first recipient of that pro-
fessorship, Dr. Ramon Berguer,
was Sam's surgeon in the late
1990s and that the Frankel
name will live on as a mark of
distinguished achievement and
promise in cardiovascular medi-
cine and surgery at our univer-
sity. We will miss Sam and we
offer our deepest condolences
to his family and loved ones."
