THE BEST OF EVERYTHING

A Variety Of Choices

Vineyards grows into 'Vineyards Marketplace.'

p

OTPOURRI
Quietly and at its own pace,
Vineyards on Northwestern
Hwy, Farmington Hills, continues to be
more than meets the eyes ... The original
former party store status is long gone and
it is becoming more and more a one-stop
shopping experience ... Today, Vineyards
is composed of at least 10 sectors that
make up its present accumulation ...
Nibbles and Nuts, Maggie's Chocolates,
Bloom's Kitchen, Deli Basket, Bake Station,
Vino Bin, Fountain Works, Parties Plus,
Catering World, etc., plus Vineyards itself
... Counter-selecting dining-in at lunch or
dinner is already here with more features
planned on a growing listing of future
services and shopping conveniences under
the Vineyards Marketplace umbrella.
THE FIRST SYNAGOGUE in Cabo San
Lucas, Mexico, will be opened in April,
writes David Greenberg ... "We will have
an Orthodox rabbi, who will provide
kosher Shabbat meals and kosher meals
for visitors to Cabo" ... David's wife, Karla,
born in Mazatlan, converted to Judaism
and their son, Joshua, is almost a year
old ... Dave and his business partner,
Jim Sutter, opened their first Greenberg's
Mexicatessen restaurant in Cabo San
Lucas' Plaza Nautica in 1997 and now
have three Senor Greenberg Restaurants
in Cabo ... He is the son of former
Detroiters Ron Greenberg and Hedy Cohen
Mishkind.
WHERE THEY ARE DEPT. ... Chef
Keith Supian, former executive chef at
Van Dyke Place and Whitney in Detroit,
is executive chef at Fresh Farms Market
on Fisher Road, Grosse Pointe, where he
heads its gourmet carryout and catering

... Keith is also noted for his
great Jewish dishes includ-
ing many from the recipes
of his grandmother, Hannah
Gellerman ... Keith is the son
of Southfield-ite Beverly and the
late Richard Supian.
HE'S FULL OF ideas, always
coming up with different ways
to make pizza ... So it won't
be much of a surprise if Wes
Picula, Robert Jacob's director
of operations at Buddy's Pizza, concocts a
psychedelic pie to go with the new outdoor
look at the Buddy's on Northwestern Hwy.,
Farmington Hills.
CHECK OUT THOSE bottles of
wine folks can get 50 percent off every
Wednesday at Sea Grille, Orchard Lake
Road north of 15 Mile, West Bloomfield
... owner Craig Dilworth and wife, Bobbie,
have a lot of fine buys on the list.
FIRST TIME SINCE opening, Forte
on Old Woodward south of Maple,
Birmingham, is now serving breakfast
... Chef Travis Holowinski and General
manager Dave Duey, are attempting to
make it a somewhat different morning
destination spot Mondays-Fridays, 7:30-
10:30, and Sundays till 1:30 ... Along
with the regular breakfast fare are items
rarely, if ever, seen like poached eggs over
seared whitefish with cherry Hollandaise
topping served with cubed Forte potatoes
herb-roasted and pan-fried with onions
and bell peppers ($10) ... Also scrambled
eggs with chevre cheese and chives, Forte
potatoes and turkey sausage ($8), and
seared crab cake with grilled tomato and
poached eggs plus dijon hollandaise ($10)
... True blue vegetarians enjoy the open-

faced oven-roasted fluffy
omelet with diced tomatoes,
asparagus tips, spinach, shal-
lots and roasted peppers plus
Forte potatoes ($8).
MAIL DEPT. ... "As
Shirley and I look back to
the many places we dined at
while living back in Detroit,
the best neighborhood bar
and restaurant was Diamond
Jim Brady's on Seven Mile
Road. When we moved to Franklin
Village, it was Beau Jack's on 15 Mile. Gary
Cochran, owner of Beau Jack's and his
wife, Mary Lou, are like family. We go back
a long time. When visiting back in Detroit,
it is the first place we go to, having the
whitefish plate.
"There are really good restaurants here
around Aventura, although certainly not
as many as back home, and we have eaten
at most. We have also eaten from our area
to Ft. Lauderdale, Pompano, Coral Springs,
Boca Raton, Delray and Palm Beach. The
best deli in Ventura is Moe's. Everyone
here knows Moe's, where they stand in line
and like it. The Peppermill is good, and
people here rush for its early bird.
"There are many kosher places, too.
Chef Allen's is top notch four-and-a-half
stars and pricey, next Morton's and then
Houston's, which is not as pricey but
always a good choice. There are many
kosher places, too. Morton's we found very
good but waiters who can't wait to pick
up your plate and are in such a hurry.
A fine Russian restaurant, Tatiana's, is
located in Hallandale, owned by Russian
Jews Tatiana Verzar and Walter and
Rita Abolsky. The food is considered by

many to be five stars with 400 dishes,
mostly Russian, Eastern European and
Continental" ... Leonard Schultz, Aventura,
Fla.
THE HUGE SURGE of popularity in
ballroom dancing from TV's top-rated
Dancing with the Stars makes it even more
fun to watch ... Trophy winner galore
Dee Shapiro and the rest of the worldwide
terpsi competitors will vie for awards and
cash prizes at the annual Michigan Dance
Challenge put on yearly by dance stylist
Mark Brock ... It's morning, noon and
evening, Thursday, April 3, Friday, April
4, and Saturday, April 5, at Hyatt Regency
Dearborn ... Dee performs Saturday
afternoon in the pro-am Gold level com-
petition ... The great dancing (Latin,
smooth, standard, swing, etc.) has $40,000
in prizes to give out ... Call Mark for tick-
ets, (248) 561-7711.
NOW THAT HE is back living here
from Florida, you can bet the mortgage
that Mickey Fishman will again be very
active with the Michigan Jewish Sports
Hall of Fame and MJS Foundation ... He
was one of the Hall's original members,
past president and himself an inductee in
1998 ... Mickey is living at the Heritage in
Southfield.
CONGRATS ... To Ben Rothenberg
on his 18th birthday ... To Alex Winkler
on his 60th birthday ... To Sid Neuman
on his 79th birthday ... To Maxine
Weingarden on her 71st birthday ... To
Susie and Paul Weinstock on their 15th
anniversary ... To Wendy and Henry
Abrams on their 23rd anniversary. ❑
