Vets Oppose JDAMs Sale
Washington/JTA — The Jewish War
Veterans opposes a proposed arms
sale to Saudi Arabia. The group object-
ed particularly to the sale of 900 Joint
Direct Attack Munitions, devices that
substantially increase accuracy when
attached to bombs.
"While the administration agreed to
sell Saudi Arabia sophisticated arms as
part of its efforts to contain the threat
posed by Iran, and the guidance sys-
tems will supposedly be programmed
not to include U.S. bases in Iraq and
Israel as targets, it is important that
such hi-tech equipment not fall into
the hands of the government of Saudi
Arabia, a sworn enemy of Israel and a
nation which has called the Iraqi War
illegal," said JWV.

Israeli Victim Laid To Rest
New York/JTA — U.S. authorities iden-
tified and repatriated a bone fragment
belonging to an Israeli victim of the
9-11 attacks.
After confirming through DNA
tests that a bone fragment found in
the debris of the World Trade Center
belonged to Israeli victim Mona
Avraham, U.S. authorities shipped it
back to Israel. On Jan. 31, her family
buried the fragment.
Avraham, 30, was among the 56 pas-
sengers and nine crew aboard United
Airlines Flight 175, which Al-Qaida
terrorists rammed into the south
tower on Sept. 11, 2001.

Shekel Hits New High
Jerusalem/JTA — The Israeli shekel
hit a new 10-year best against the U.S.
dollar, at 3.62 shekels to the dollar. So
far in 2008, the shekel has been one
of the world's strongest currencies,
appreciating more than 6 percent
against the dollar.
The shekel appreciated about 10
percent against the dollar in 2007.

Service Stymies Calls
Jerusalem/JTA — Israel's main phone
company is offering a service that
blocks calls to sex lines.
Bezeq announced that it has invest-
ed $500,000 in a "kosher" phone line
that is unable to dial sex chat forums
and other identifiable "pornographic"
numbers. Leading rabbis have
approved the service, which is aimed
primarily at an Orthodox clientele.
Bezeq once had exclusive control
over Israeli telephone service but now
faces competition from cable services.

The Super Bowl In Israel
Jerusalem/JTA — Nefesh B'Nefesh set
up a large-screen TV in its Jerusalem
offices for expatriate Americans to
watch the Super Bowl.
The game started at 1:30 a.m.
Monday Israel time.
On Sunday, several Israeli restau-
rants, including a new American
Hooters, held Super Bowl parties.
For those unable to stay awake to
watch the game live, it was rebroadcast
at 7 p.m. Monday.

Kids' Book Bashes Religion
Berlin/JTA — A German author is
defending his right to ridicule the
three main world faiths in a book
intended for children.
Germany's Federal Ministry for
Families announced on Jan. 30 that it
is considering banning the book's sale
to minors, and the Central Council
of Jews in Germany agrees with the
move.
Which Way to God? asks the Little
Piglet, written by Michael Schmidt-
Salomon and illustrated by Helge
Nyncke, caricatures an Orthodox
Jewish rabbi, a Catholic priest and an
Imam as fanatic and wrathful. The
book came out in October.

Answering
Israel's Critics

The Charge
The Muslim World News Service
reported last week that U.N. Special
Secretary for Religious Freedom,
Asma Jahangir, condemned Israel
for imposing discriminatory and
arbitrary restrictions on Muslim
and Christian access to sacred
places.

The Answer
The news service failed to report
that Jahangir praised Israel for the
lack of any state-imposed religious
persecution. The news service is
obviously biased, as it omitted her
praise and took her criticisms out
of context (Israel's security needs).
