Israel Study
Programs

Three years ago Rabbi Lee
Buckman, head of school at
the Frankel Jewish Academy
in West Bloomfield, organized
a national mission designed
to introduce various post-high
school programs in Israel to
high school college guidance
counselors.
This effort was sponsored
by MASA, an organization that
funds and markets long-term
programs in Israel. MASA is
sponsored its second mission
for college guidance counsel-
ors this month. The Frankel
Jewish Academy participated
in this eight-day trip, along
with 21 other schools, includ-
ing several modern Orthodox
and non-denominational
Jewish day high schools as
well as public and private sec-
ular schools with significant
Jewish populations.
Last year, about one-
third of the Frankel Jewish
Academy's graduating class,
approximately 20 students,
deferred college to spend a
"gap year" in Israel in a vari-
ety of post high school pro-
grams: studying music, Young
Judaea's Year Course, service
in Israel's Defense Force, and
study at universities or yeshi-
vot.
Ten years ago, only yeshi-
vah programs and three or
four non-yeshivah programs
existed. Today, there are close
to 200 different post-high
school programs available to
students.
"Studying or volunteering
in Israel helps our students
develop a love of Israel that
is simply impossible to cul-
tivate on shorter trips," said
Rabbi Buckman. "A year in
Israel helps students focus on
becoming better people and
better Jews.
"For the academy, Israel
programs are a priority and
are integral to the mission
of our school. I am confident
that our college counselor,
Mrs. Patricia Bostwick, will
return with the most up-to-
date information for promot-
ing post-high school study in
Israel."

Is there a belief litmus-test' for
being Jewish?

Can you be a Traditional Jew and believe
in evolution? Can Halakhah (Jewish Law)
change in Orthodoxy? Should halakhah
incorporate science and other secular
knowledge in its decision-making proc-
ess? Interested in participating as four
of the world's top scholars discuss and
debate these issues—and more?

Join us for an unprecedented
colloquium, bringing together Rabbi
Dr. Daniel Sperber, Rabbi Natan
Slifkin, Dr. Marc Shapiro, and Dr.
Menachem Kellner. If you know who
they are, you won't want to miss it.
If you don't, you'll never forget it.
