Israel Study Programs Three years ago Rabbi Lee Buckman, head of school at the Frankel Jewish Academy in West Bloomfield, organized a national mission designed to introduce various post-high school programs in Israel to high school college guidance counselors. This effort was sponsored by MASA, an organization that funds and markets long-term programs in Israel. MASA is sponsored its second mission for college guidance counsel- ors this month. The Frankel Jewish Academy participated in this eight-day trip, along with 21 other schools, includ- ing several modern Orthodox and non-denominational Jewish day high schools as well as public and private sec- ular schools with significant Jewish populations. Last year, about one- third of the Frankel Jewish Academy's graduating class, approximately 20 students, deferred college to spend a "gap year" in Israel in a vari- ety of post high school pro- grams: studying music, Young Judaea's Year Course, service in Israel's Defense Force, and study at universities or yeshi- vot. Ten years ago, only yeshi- vah programs and three or four non-yeshivah programs existed. Today, there are close to 200 different post-high school programs available to students. "Studying or volunteering in Israel helps our students develop a love of Israel that is simply impossible to cul- tivate on shorter trips," said Rabbi Buckman. "A year in Israel helps students focus on becoming better people and better Jews. "For the academy, Israel programs are a priority and are integral to the mission of our school. I am confident that our college counselor, Mrs. Patricia Bostwick, will return with the most up-to- date information for promot- ing post-high school study in Israel."
