Dr. Jim Grant uses ultrasound in a preoperative area to prepare a patient for a nerve block

at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

Medicine Vs. Law
With a father who is an Oakland
County Probate Court judge and a sis-
ter who sits on the bench in Oakland
County Circuit Court, it would be
natural to think that Grant would have
enrolled in law school instead of Wayne
State University's School of Medicine in
Detroit.
"I wanted a profession where I didn't
have to wear a tie every day," Grant says
with a laugh. "No really, in all sincerity,
I like the one-on-one contact with our
patients and I like helping someone on
the road to recovery and better health!'
After putting in up to 16-hour days
at Beaumont, Grant divides his time
between his family and professional
organizations. He and his wife Lisa, who
is a Beaumont physical medicine and
rehabilitation doctor, have two children,
Brendan and Alexandra.
Grant recently completed a three-year
term as chair of the Michigan Board of
Medicine, which governs the practice
of medicine in the state. In addition, he
is an officer of the American Society of
Anesthesiologists and vice-chair of the

board of directors of the Michigan State
Medical Society.
