ON THE COVER
The Jewish Americans from page C1
tion is not only given to achievers.
"Like every minority group, we have heroes and
villains," Sanderson says."We've done things right,
and we've done things wrong. In telling an hon-
est story, we've had to deal with things that might
make me, or somebody else, uncomfortable.
Louis Brandeis, the first Jewish
"[During the Civil War] in the South, Jews
U.S. Supreme Court justice
fought for the North and the South. Jews were on
the right side and the wrong side. There were Jews
in the South who had slaves. You can't tell the story
about the South without telling both sides, and
that's what we do in this series"
Other negatives that enter into the scope of The
Jewish Americans include references to Detroit.
The anti-Semitism expressed by auto pioneer
Henry Ford and Catholic clergyman and radio
host Charles Coughlin is recalled.
"I chose to write about Ford as a way of under-
standing what the Jewish experience was like in
the '20s and '30s with pervasive anti-Semitism','
says Grubin, who has won multiple Emmy Awards
and has covered subjects from science to dance.
"He [Ford] became emblematic of an attitude
in the country then. It is sort of unbelievable
Songwriter Irving Berlin, pictured
today that someone so admired and idolized
here in 1937
could be an anti-Semite.
E
"Father Coughlin used hatred to give himself
power. There are still haters, but they can't get
on the radio and say what he would say. That
says something about how Americans are more
tolerant and civilized"
In whittling down the vast amount of infor-
mation into six hours, Grubin had to leave out
many Jewish Americans who helped impact
life across the country. For example, there is an
extensive section about songwriter Irving Berlin
presented by singer-actor Mandy Patinkin, but
the accomplishments of Aaron Copland, George
Gershwin and other great composers are left out.
"Berlin, who came from a home where only
Yiddish was spoken and whose father was a can-
tor, clearly wrote one of the greatest American
songs, `God Bless America:" Sanderson says. "In
the most profound Jewish way, he donated all
the proceeds of that song to charity.
Detroit slugger Hank Greenberg
"Not only did he take the music from his
Jewish background and create a great American
song, but he gave away the proceeds of that song.
America helped make Irving Berlin a great song-
writer, and Irving Berlin gave back to America"
Grubin, who has visited Michigan in the
course of making other documentaries and for
family summer vacations, has connected with
this production on a personal level.
"As a Jew, I feel my own place in the story as
someone interested in learning," Grubin explains.
"The Jew's tradition is about learning with study
almost like prayer, and I love studying in that way.
"As the film ends, a rabbi explains that we're no
longer Jews because we're identified by some gov-
ernment or people who want to ostracize based
on religion. Today, we're Jews by choice." ❑
The Jewish Americans airs 9-11 p.m.
Wednesdays, Jan. 9-23, on Detroit Public
Television-Channel 56.
