CIRCUS ABOUT TOWN Urban
areas are at the center of the lat-
est Cirque du Soleil production,
Saltimbanco. The acrobatics and the
music give a sense of what goes into
making an upbeat, pulsating city —
diverse people, breathtaking skyscrap-
ers and the rushed pace of activity.
Energized street entertainers mix with
gymnasts for a variety of antics and sometimes a suggestion of family. Electronic
music provides a background for choreography that reaches from Spanish flamen-
co to a bungee ballet. The show, which runs Jan. 23-27, is performed at Joe Louis
Arena in Detroit. The entertainment begins at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, 3:30
and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 and 5 p.m. Sunday. $37.50-$67.50. (313) 471-6606.

COOLEST ART The 26th anniversary of Michigan's largest ice carving event
— the Plymouth International Ice Sculpture Spectacular (top, right) — will fea-
ture dozens of statues carved from single blocks of ice, numerous multiple-block
sculptures crafted from as many as 100 blocks and dozens of pieces formed from
330-pound segments of frozen water. Spectators can see works in progress as well
as the final structures Friday-Sunday, Jan. 25-27, in downtown Plymouth. The free
exhibit showcases the projects of professional ice carvers in addition to the creative
initiatives of students enrolled in colleges and high schools. The majority of the
carving and the student competitions take place during daylight hours, when visi-
tors can see how the work is done with chain saws, razor-sharp chisels and blow-
torches. Local schools with culinary instruction provide professional judges and
carving teams. (734) 459-6969, ext. 1#. www.wattsupinc.com .
