TIME TO TR NSFORM
JOIE DE JUNGLE There's still time to catch a performance of The Lion King
(above), running through Jan. 6 at the Detroit Opera House, 1526 Broadway. The
musical, connecting with people of all ages, brings animals to life, acts out fam-
ily conflict and ultimately explores the right to rule. The score, by Elton John and
Tim Rice, includes "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" and "Circle of Life," and the
Disney production, directed by Julie Taymor, is a Tony-Award winner. Show times
are 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
$17-$130. (313) 237-3412.
STORIED DANCES The St. Petersburg Ballet Theater travels to Detroit to
showcase two very different classic dances — Carmen and Ballet Spectacular. The
European company, with stellar performers, appears 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday,
Jan. 10-11, at the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, 350 Madison.
Choreographers and dancers, recruited from accomplished troupes throughout
Russia, communicate passionate intrigue with Carmen and modern innovation with
Ballet Spectacular. Yuri,Petukhov, artistic director, has planned both presentations.
He tells the story of Carmen in four acts and combines the tales of Chopiniana,
Scheherazade and Bolero into the other piece. $27-$47. (313) 887-8500.

GETTING SERIOUS As the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit comes to
the end of its current exhibit, Words Fail Me, there will be a free lecture to explore
the ideas of the pieces on display. Jonathan Flatley, assistant professor of English
at Wayne State University, will discuss "Art and Melancholia or Why Dwelling on
Loss Is Not Necessarily Depression." The group exhibit, which relates to the con-
nection of visual arts to language, features pieces representing melancholia. Flatley
speaks 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at the museum, 4454 Woodward. He is author
of Affective Mapping: Melancholia and the Politics of Modernism. The exhibit, which
continues through Jan. 20, can be seen 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays and Sundays
and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays. (313) 832-6622. www.mocadetroit.org .

GREATS IN GEAR Thinking green is a big part of this year's North American
International Auto Show (opposite page, right) being held Jan. 19-26 at Cobo
Center in Detroit. As cars, vans and trucks from around the world are being pre-
sented, there will be opportunities to see hybrids and the latest fuel-efficient mod-
els. Getting the show into gear, and benefiting a group of local children's charities,
will be the black-tie charity preview running 6-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, when the
headline entertainment will be Canadian rock group Barenaked Ladies. Benefit
tickets are $400. While Automotive Education Day, Jan. 23, is a highlight for
high-school students, photo and art enthusiasts can enter contests. Auto Racing
